We've seen what has happened to the economy and country of Zimbabwe....will South Africa eventually be on the same path?

The ANC was predicated on violence, and it will continue to use political violence to purge the whites remaining.

Delouse it is SPLC and all that, but we'll be seeing genocidal attacks in rural areas of the coastal states by the end of the 2020s in all likelihood with democrats looking the other way too often.

The ANC was a communist, racist organization that believed AIDS was a CIA conspiracy and disastrously mismanaged the South African economy...bit otherwise they were brilliant.

South Africa has been a quagmire of poverty, crime and violence for decades, centuries even. Apartheid was evil, but the end of apartheid was scarcely any better. And yes, Communism and racialism are the primary culprits, along with plain old corruption and egotistical self-serving leaders.

Can anyone name the difference between the image of South Afica in that video and the city of Detroit, Michigan?

Capetown is running out of water. They waited too long to make the necessary adaptations.

When I was in the region in the late 1990s (two separate trips totaling about 24 months duration) I only spent about a week in RSA. That entire time I was traveling with an older fellow, actually a millionaire who owns the worlds largest crossbow manufacturing firm. He had lived most of his life in RSA, but had been over the preceding years transitioning some of his business and some of his residence to the U.K. He was visiting a buddy of his in Botswana for reasons that I now forget and indicated he needed to make a trip to Joberg and Pretoria for a couple of days but would be coming back to Gaborone. He wanted me to accompany him mainly to have a second set of eyeballs and in a pinch someone else to man a weapon (he kept several in the truck, and I never asked about the legality of crossing over international boundaries with them).

This guy drove around in an enormous Land Rover that looked like a military vehicle and was always armed.

RSA was absolutely beautiful landscape and the limited observations I made about the social dynamics revealed it to be completely distinctive from Botswana. Multiple times that we stopped along highways in rural areas and within a few minutes there were derelicts/thugs turning up and starting to approach. On one occasion we literally jumped into the truck and sped away as it seemed they were gonna make a rush on the truck armed with knives or metal pipes.

The security barriers, spiked walls, razor wire, etc. that Southern talks about was of course obvious everywhere. We made a brief trip into a very middle class suburb of Joberg where he paid a visit to a family. On the way there we passed these enormous shanty towns that covered massive areas along the highway. And then once we were in Pretoria it was in stark contrast: it was as if we had suddenly teleported to an upper-middle-class neighborhood in 1960s California.

We spent most of the time I was there staying at a game lodge the exact location of which I cannot recall. This dude (whose name I cannot now even recall, though I want to say Horton was his surname) was friends with the owners of this game park / lodge and we spent a couple nights there. There were African hired help at the lodge and one of the conversations I overheard was pretty telling.

This lady who was serving food was very quiet, morose even, and Horton inquired. Turns out, this ladies husband had been murdered a day or two before. He had been riding in a "Combie" (basically a word for mini-bus taxi) that was packed full (probably 9 or 10 passengers, they really pack these Toyota mini-vans full). A rival taxi "gang" decided it was time to "punish" the gang/clan (whatever they are) who owned this particular Combie and made a hit on it. They opened up on the van with AKs. I don't know if it was just one gunman with an AK or multiple, but they basically just peppered this fucking van full of innocent bystanders, probably to make a point: ride with "them" and this is what happens.

I also heard several times (this would also include conversations with white South Africans I knew in Botswana) of stories of people getting caught up in gunfights on the streets. Once you hear people casually talk about the "time I came out of the pharmacy and suddenly there was a gun fight happening" three or four times you realize: this is not uncommon. Also it was the way people talked about it. You could tell there was a deep recognition that "this is some fucked up shit we live in," but at the same time, an obvious outward effort to cope with it by treating it as if it was no big deal and "just part of life in RSA."

ADDIT: Hah! Here is a video I found typing in "Pretoria Suburb." Woodhill sounds familiar but not certain that was the actual neighorhood I was in. Looks a bit more swank than I recall, but you get the idea.

The spokesman for the ruling party essentially says 'we will take your land; either give it to us now, or we will simply change the laws and take it from you'.
