It is a bit like "we don't control it, so we ban it". And Islam has to rule every aspect of life (like any religion, I guess).

I've never owned bitcoins and my personal opinion is that their value (not being backed by anything of substance) is rather low.

That said, I think some (or perhaps even many) Muslims view with scepticism anything "modern".

Look for example at the subject of vaccinations.

According to some Muslims, their use is forbidden:

Vaccination is Not Permissible (Vaccine Fatwa).

I don't have either. It is something that the governments don't control, so we can understand that they don't like it. The mufti certainly banned the bitcoin at the request of the Egyptian government.

For most of them, anything that is not in the Quran or in a hadith is haram.

I remember the Islamists in Pakistan who attacked NGO's which tried to make a campaign of polio vaccination in the population.

Well, at least they have a 100+ year track record of relative stability.

I have never had an issue walking into a supermarket or a gas station and purchasing their products with a Federal Reserve Note.
I would speculate that around 99.9% of those businesses would laugh in my face if I tried to do the same with bitcoins.

These words are all true ... just didn't want you to think that Federal Reserve notes are backed up by GOLD or anything of "substance" ... USA went off the "Gold Standard" at least twice IIRC ... once almost 100yds ago and the other during the Nixon era (I think). So off and then totally off.
