Am tired of fighting Win 7 64, fond memories of Xp and my old games, not interested in the newer stuff.

What's the downside? Have a legal XP install disc and this place has most the extra goodies. A google search turns up the downloads of service packs, ect and there's a How to Clean Install Windows XP

Any warnings and/or words of wisdom.

Unless you're making a separate XP boot in order to run a really old classic game that doesn't run on Win7, I wouldn't bother. Even then, I don't think it's worth it, or even able to properly do so with new hardware anymore.

You're not going to have things like essential supported drivers and software. Such as your video card driver. Many games also aren't made for, or tested on, WinXP anymore.

Win7 works just fine. I can think of two extremely specific situations in which it annoys me, but you likely haven't been in those situations or noticed them.

The only reason I upgraded my gaming desktop PC to Win10 was to be sure I had DirectX12 support in the future. Because the douche nozzles at MS held it as blackmail in order to make us do so by going back on their promise to support it on Win7. Those assholes are almost as bad as Apple nowadays. What am I saying? Apple is, by far, the biggest OS douchebags.

Don´t:

https://www.wired.com/2017/05/still-use ... are-worst/

Quote:
But for Windows XP and other expired operating systems, the patches weren’t there in the first place. With very few exceptions—including an emergency patch after the first wave of WannaCry infections and expensive, specialized service contracts—Microsoft no longer provides any security support for the OS. A computer running XP today is a castle with no moat, portcullis raised, doors flung open, greeting the ravaging hoards with wine spritzers and jam.

And it’s only going to get worse.

In a nutshell, don´t downgrade to XP unless you want to re-enact the German-Austrian border in mid September 2015 ;)

XP is entering its fourth year with no support and no patches, Nef already mentioned the lack of driver support for new hardware so if you have to replace anything you might find you´ll have to move back to Win7 anyway.

What sort of fighting Win 7 is going on?

Win 7 was a good OS I thought.

I've got a couple of old PCs with XP on them, that I gave away but somehow found their way back to me, out in the workshop. I hang onto them for old games but they haven't been used in years. I've toyed with putting XP on modern hardware but drivers, particularly for sound, were problematic. Plus old games on modern monitors tend to look like crap and I'm out of CRTs. My 4 PCs in the house all have Win 10 and one has Ubuntu as well. No longer even bothering with Mac OS because there is literally nothing that doesn't run better on PC that matters to me.

My recommendation would be to have an extra 10 year old PC with XP on it for old games but don't even connect it to the 'net. Hook it up to a CRT to fully relive the past. :)

Win7 is great.

Dunno what the problem is. *shrug* Can I assume it's just Old-Timer LD and plain stubbornness?

Granted.. there were a few very quick UI settings I always changed from the default Win7 layout. But it wasn't a big deal to do.

My computer just made the Win XP install a non option, the video card is messing up. It's old so a new one is a waste.

Instead I bought an Acer Aspire Desktop, 7th Gen Intel Core i5-7400, 8GB DDR4, 2TB HDD, Windows 10 Home, TC-780-AMZKi5

Still stuck with the 64bits and my older games problems, will keep trying the different work arounds.

You realize that only comes with the onboard Intel HD graphics, right?

Which should work okay for your olde RPGs. More recent 3D games not so much, though. Just FYI. But dropping in a dedicated GPU is simple these days, so no worries.
