Turn 6 is spectacular for the Russians. The 80mm OBA module keeps drawing black cards and keeps up the FFE stalling the German advance in the middle. It started as 5 black 2 red deck, down to one black one red. On the western edge near Tramvanay the Germans creep forward in Turn 6 and step back, then Russians creep forward and advance into close combat. The result is one Ambush (Russians ambush and eliminate 2 German 4-6-7 squads) and one non-ambush ongoing Close Combat (Germans kill a Russian 9-1 and 6-3-8, Russians kill a German 10-2 and a 4-6-7, surviving German squad and 2 Russian squads locked in Close Combat).

In Gun Assembly Hall S-17, P tries to rescue a bunch of abandoned MGs by covering them with a German Hero. Three German squads and 8-1 leader advance into CC, Ambush, and capture the German Hero.

Near the east edge, a German squad berserks and will have to charge across 200m open ground to hit a Russian Antitank Gun.

Game is still going and will be Turn 7. At the end of T7 game ends on a 1-5 (d6).

Russian goals. Keep the Germans from taking six more stone locations, gun down the German berserk squad. Run up the CVP total if more Germans try to get into the MLR.

My strategy of resisting seems to have paid off. Barring a freakish turn of luck, the Russians will win the 24 October CG day and P will have lost almost two companies of infantry and up to six leaders (he has 6 wounded leaders). So P will have to select at least on Idle Day on 25 October and MIGHT have to take another one on 26 October in order to have an unstoppable assault force.

If so, I should have, by 27 October, a really substantial fortified defense around much of the Bread Factory and associated Residential District.

Russian casualties have also been substantial, but primarily among conscript squads used as speedbumps to get P to shoot alot rather than move alot. Probably about 2/3 the casualties numerically. A big hurt applied to the Germans on 24 October has been in wounded and killed leaders. The CVP ratio is probably about 2:1 favoring the Russians for this day.

I just realized that things are even rosier. Unless that DM German squad in C17 rallies during the Rally Phase of German Turn 7 (which is unlikely), it will be eliminated during the Route Phase. In Russian Turn 7 advance, I can sneak onto that wrecked StuG placing it in Russian control if the game ends on Turn 7, and scrounge it for a captured German LMG. Also can pick up the two German LMGs in S17 if I can hold the hex until Russian Turn 7.

Both players get to use captured equipment (with penalties) if they successfully Retain (dr1-2 on 1d6) them during the Refit Phase between Campaign Days.

So the reason why the 24 October CG day has worked well for the Russians is as follows:

1. Well placed bunches of reserves located to the rear, within central factories, to move forward to reinforce the line when things became patchy.

2. Luck. Getting four FFEs out of a 5B 2R soviet 80mm offboard artillery module is a bit lucky.

3. Good use of speedbump Partisans in contact hexes to keep the Germans shooting rather than moving.

24 Oct ends after Turn 7 with a Russian Win. The Germans net gain 16 stone locations. Casualties are 46 CVP dead Russians, 69 CVP dead Germans. The Germans losses were especially heavy among leaders. The Russian losses were heavy among Conscript (factory worker militias) squads. P elects to take an Idle Day for 25 October so the next CG day shall be 26 October.

In the refit phase(s) the Russians battle harden 3 squads, promote one 8-0 leader to 8-1, and purchase: 1 Guards SMG Coy, 1 Rifle Coy, 1 Heavy Weapons Platoon, 1 Molotov Projector Platoon, 6x40 Fort Points (240 in all... 120 on the 25th and 120 on the 26th), 2 Sniper Number increases, 1x120mm offboard artillery with Normal Ammo, 1x70mm offboard artillery with Scarce ammo. Two Campaign Purchase Points are carried over to 27 October when that comes around.

The Russians will start 26 October with 111 squads, 30-something crews, and leaders enough for one leader per six squads (which is better than most Russians, mostly owing to the fact that I have lost very few leaders overall so far in the campaign, and because in the first couple days when the Russians were low on leaders I promoted out of the ranks twice).

I broke down and gave P some advice. I do not usually do that because it can seem pedantic. Basically, I told him that when I was playing the Germans, I was happy to spend the extra campaign purchase points for Offboard Artillery Observers because (1) it freed up on-board leaders, (2) they get Field Phones (which are super reliable) and (3) they can see everything just about, which greatly enhances the German OBA effectiveness if the Russians do a lot of skulking back during the Russian movement phases.

Russian control line (yellow) and map hex changes starting 26 October 1942.

SH - shell hole
wt - wrecked tank
ATD - antitank ditch
tr or trench - trench
red hexagon - fortified building
w- wire

"Gutted" factories have no roofs even in hexes with roof depictions.

gray-filled hexes are stone buildings that collapsed to rubble
brown filled hexes are wooden buildings that collapsed to rubble
shell holes eliminate wooden rubble where marked (so it's open ground with low quality cover from shell holes)

Is that really worth it? Or did you have to spend the points on something?
