Ultima Underworld "The most important game you should play"

GOG is said to have sound problems.

Dos version is OK on my system http://www.myabandonware.com/game/ultim ... -abyss-1l1

GOG version I played had jittery issues in the 3D view, years ago.

Dunno if it was my video card drivers or the OS. Haven't tried since.. maybe it's not an issue now.

With newer games of similar focus coming out, I'm not too concerned.

Dos versions work fine with Dosbox 0.73/D-Fend setup.

As far as present games having the same features-which ones have all the features pointed out in this game.

TES series comes close, especially Morrowind.

Does this mean dump modern games, no but it shows these features can be incorporated in games.

That said I confess I haven't played UU, some features aren't my cuppa, like learn a language and picking a class at startup.

This game had all these features 25 years ago, Morrowind took another 10 years.

GOG versions of DOS games use DOSbox, with preset game-specific custom settings where needed.

As for other games similar to Ultima Underworld.. I'll just list a few which use the 1st-person interactive dungeon crawl RPG theme. Ones I've played, but there are more.

From recent years:

The Elder Scrolls Series. Skryim being the latest, of course.

The Quest http://store.steampowered.com/app/428880/The_Quest/

The Fall of the Dungeon Guardians http://store.steampowered.com/app/40945 ... Guardians/

Heroes of a Broken Land http://store.steampowered.com/app/31447 ... oken_Land/

Might & Magic X - Legacy http://store.steampowered.com/app/23875 ... X__Legacy/

Delver http://store.steampowered.com/app/249630/Delver/

Similar, but not 'Stock Fantasy' themed:

StarCrawlers http://store.steampowered.com/app/318970/StarCrawlers/

... and numerous others I've not listed. Not to mention old stuff available at GOG, such as Dungeon Hack (D&D), and Anvil Of Dawn.

The combat & movement systems may vary a bit, but all these games have similarities.

Those aren't first-person view RPGs. But, yes, they are good.

I limited it to first-person '3D' ones, like Ultima Underworld, to stick with the most notable feature of the subject of this thread.

I was more a Dungeon Master fan, which came out several years before Ultima Underworld.

I played it on the Atari ST back then.
