Just had a 'find the attack subs before they break out into the Atlantic' mission, two Romeos. Holy shit.

They were completely invisible. They could see me though, as the odd torpedo came in. Fortunately, very bad torpedoes, so easily dodged. I was at flank speed dodging torps with the active sonar on, figuring they can see me anyway and i might have a chance to see them.

In the end BOL shots were all I had - I beat them more by my torpedoes being awesome and theirs being terrible rather than any other consideration. Those SSKs really are bastards to find when they want to be in full sneak mode.

Romeos aren't even a modern submarine.

Fortunately they're slow as old people fucking. Therefore, homing torpedo food. :)

The developer was in a live stream this AM.

I asked him whether the enemy sub AI will get some improvements regarding aggressive counter-fire BOL shots.

He said that the next update (v1.05), which they're currently working on, will have AI improvements and crew voice-overs. 8-)

Judging by how many people have been watching the streams, and gushing about the game, they must be having good sales. I didn't expect so many younger folks, unfamiliar with post-war sub tech & tactics, to be into an RSR-style submarine game. But they're coming out of the woodwork in droves. :)

True... though if a Mk48 is coming your way that generally applies anyway.

By far the most dangerous thing in this game is your own torpedo. Having had a few lock on to me before in error - that is almost certain death / heavy damage!

You woulda thought the Alfas were the best given they can almost outrun a torpedo but they don't seem so hot. Wonder if we will get a chance to skipper an Alfa.

Can always do so with the mod.

Of course, running around in most of the Soviet subs of this era is like being blind. In the Alfa's case, it's like a race car with the windows all painted black.

Major patch incoming for this now, you can play the beta of it right now if you opt in on Steam.

Neutral shipping has been added so you have to be a bit more careful with your targeting now. Apparently oil rigs are in, though I've not seen one yet myself (I did see a humpback whale for the first time...). Some new missions, nothing earthshattering (attacking a SAG is one I noticed).

The difficulty of the 1984 campaign is WAY WAY up. Kilos are almost invisible now, though I've sneaked up on them so it can be done, but it's not like before where even the Kilos are spotted very quickly on passive sonar. Junk like Novembers are still meat for the beast but the more modern Russian submarines, while their ability to detect you is still pretty poor, are noticeably stealthier themselves, though not Kilo levels of invisible. Active sonar is actually tempting to use. And the Russian response to an attack now is totally off the chain compared to what it was like before. If you're attacking a SAG then you need to make the initial volley really count, because the response will be MASSIVE and it'll be evasive maneuvers being chased by a dozen torpedoes about 60 seconds after you fire.

On the other hand Harpoons seem more effective against surface ships than they used to be, used to be the CIWS would get them every time, I've taken out Udaloys with a single Harpoon in the beta though so I think something's up.

I would imagine you would be on Greenpeace’s naughty list if you torpedoed a humpback...
