Pix Batch 1 in great detail so that you all can see how the mess looks with counters on the map, all up close and ugly-like.

Last three.

The white die indicates that it's the end of German Turn 5 and, where it has not moved, helps you stitch the pix together in your mind.

Updated map.
Orange hexes filled with orange crayon effect are rubble.
Blue lines are Russian trenches that I capture and used to gain entry into important buildings.
Black crosses are hexes with one or more Locations captured on Oct 23.

So far I've taken 33 Stone Locations. 24 required for victory. I've inflicted about 2.5:1 casualties and a bit more than 2 companies of dead Russians.

Yellow arrows indicate things I can take if we have a Turn 6 (there is a 1d6 dr end of Turn 5, on a 1 the game ends).

Giant Yellow Hexagon indicates where my OBA 100mm artillery will fall during German Defensive Fire phase of Russian Turn 5. That's important because most of the Russians that will be caught in the blast are Russian Assault Engineers, including one that has a flamethrower. I'd like to destroy or better yet capture that thing.

Analysis so far.

Red Barricades is the King Daddy of ASL modules because it asks you to really master many aspects of the game. I don't claim to be a master of it, but I feel it has really taught me the value of the Combined Arms approach.

The Germans start the game with one module of 80mm OBA, one Sturm Company of 5-4-8s, 1 Rifle Coy of 4-6-7s (12 squads each, plus support weapons) and three PzIIILs. After that you buy what you need up to certain total limits. I was surprised in reviewing my purchase notes to see that:

My total Infantry Company purchases so far amount to THREE rifle companies and two Pionere companies (9x8-3-8s with DC, FT, and SMG). So I am nowhere near my manpower limits for total infantry purchases in the game. Success has been substantially due to the combined effects of that infantry supported by a small number of tanks, the Heavy Weapons Platoons (I bought two so far), the infantry gun platoon, and the supporting Offboard Artillery and Stukas.

I've probably destroyed, so far, something like 10 companies of Russian squads with a kill ratio in excess of 3:1. Something like 18 casualty VPs of mine lost to P were tanks. In RB, tanks are expendible. If the German doesn't get them killed they'll eventually be recalled. I'd greatly prefer to have them wrecked than to let them be recalled.

P hasn't answered this threat very well yet. It seems to me he relies too heavily on infantry because they're cheap and plentiful, at the expense of not using sufficient numbers of supporting weapons. His KV-1s have basically been hiding the last two days. He's made good use of MG kill stacks and light mortars, but everything else has been kinda weak. If there's a Heavy Weapons Coy in his OOB, I have not seen it yet. His offboard artillery, chiefly made of inexpensive 80mm mortar platoons, has harassed my troops pretty well and killed a few squads, but has not been determinative on most days. On one day (the 19th IIRC) his offboard mortars stopped one prong of my attack cold because the terrain was not too good in my favor. Otherwise, it's been mostly 80mm thrashing around.

Towards the end of each CG day I try to assess goals that can be achieved in 1 to 2 turns. Generally, it's about seizing vital hexes worth sacrificing a German squad or two, seizing less vital but important hexes that are vulnerable, and wiping out vulnerable opforces.

Not shown on any of these.

1. Stukas continue to strafe the Rooftop Mortar Hotel with an eye towards killing squads. Stuka with remaining bomb to find something worthwhile to drop it on. Maybe also on the Rooftop Mortar Hotel.

Oct 23 CG day ends at the end of Turn 6 (dr=1). Casualty VPs dead Russians 73, dead Germans 30. So about a 2.5:1 kill ratio... good for the Germans because it attrits the Russian infantry about as fast as he can bring it into the game. In the last turn he shot out a fanatic half squad and captured its flamethrower. Bad. But the good nes is that he's massively depleted in support weapons. He's got 1 HMG or 2 MMG left or something like that. It puts him in a conundrum. Infantry company, heavy weapons company, infantry gun platoon, choose two.

No German tanks were recalled. One StuGIIIB is Immobilized (track hit) in Bypass, north hexside of hex E32. One each of StuGIIIB and PzIIIL are mobile. Three German squads can Battler Harden for Oct 24 or promote. I will chose Battle Harden because they then become Fanatics - morale +1, no Cowering, no PAATCs. I can promote a 9-2, 9-1, or 8-1 leader (meaning swap one of them for a 10-2, 9-2 or 8-1 respectively). I'm leaning towards getting another 9-2 because the -2 DRM makes him very useful for stacking with an infantry gun, antitank gun, 80mm mortar, or something of that kind.

I diced up 15 CPP -- an average DR so I'll see what I need after I take a roll call of the survivors.

Perimeter Map to follow in a bit.
