So much for Defensive Pacts making the game boring ... my ally, fellow Hive Mind "Thek´Qlak Entity" (the red empire) went on to conquer most of The Shroud, while the green Fallen Empire Dorbolan Restorers is waging war on just about anyone within reach.

With 350k fleet power, at the time about three times my navy and my def pact allies (red Entity and yellow Trade Autho) quickly losing most of their ships in the border battles.

I opted for recon in force to see what the Dorbolans were bringing, refitted all ships to the dangerous tech Jump Drive to manage a cross-galaxy war in the 1st place and encountered their main fleet near the old border.

Image

I lost all of my battleships and 2/3rds of my cruisers there before I could disengage.
However, both my destroyers and corvettes did brilliantly, I now had a rough idea what was working and what was not and could easily build large numbers of smaller ships.

And yes that is an enemy transport fleet right in front of my guns and these would die quickly :D

Still, I invested big time into an improved cruiser design, since these had been key in earlier wars.
Image
Introducing the MADPLASTORP
Image

As seen in the screenshot, the Plasma Cannon would be my main source of damage, so the design did perform as planned. The battle however went to short range and the MADPLASTORP cruisers came under attacks from quite a few strike craft I could not really counter (the Battleships had been carriers and been packing Flak, however these had all been destroyed in the initial encounter).

Image
Post-battle report for my torpedo corvette vanguard. The main force, where those 17 cruisers and
18 destroyers would have been far better placed would lose another 70+ cruisers a few destroyers ... while crippling the Dobolan navy for good, sending them packing with 43k+ strength remaining. they would not return to oppose the reconquest of four worlds.

With things going well, the other neighbour decided to join the party, with Spawn of Yith (dark blue) declaring war on red Enrity, brining the Earth Fed in on their side. Good times!

Image

The Yithians engaging my fleet above the former "The Shroud" (grey) empire´s home system. The Xenomorph armies have fortunately just touched down and will prove themselves able to take the planet even without prep bombing.

Which is a good thing since I had not refitted my destroyers to more Flak, and those 49 yithian battleships turned out to be carriers filled with bombers, leaving me in a bad spot (yeah I ran ASAP)

What sort of pussy lovefest is that there in the upper right corner? United Nations of Boy Lovers? It's Empire all the way, ideally with a God Emperor, a seriously transcended superhuman as their leader.

They had a miserable time since the grey Shroud empire had been blocking all the hyperlanes connecting the United Fed to the wider galaxy. The red Q´lak Entity rivalled them early in the game, instead of me as the other direct neighbour (that +30 relations to a fellow Hive Mind maybe, and its -30 vs "normal" gov forms).

Anyway, half the game they could not get out, and when they did, they struggled for a long time vs the dark purple avian militarists, which in turn got subjugated quickly when the Dorbolan Restorers FE awoke.
Hardly an improvement for the United Fed, same as their Rival Qlak Enity dismantling the hostile-but-peaceful grey Shrouders.

Thoroughly enjoyable game for the UnFed AI player :D

;)

I my evolution of empire builds for the AI contenders, which went Devourers (devouring swarm, struggled with AI empire hate) -> Yith (Xenophobe Fan Spiritualists) -> Shroud (XenFan Pac, very good border expansion, AI leaves you alone still, you just cant declare war when you are finally ready for it :D ) -> Trade Autho (I solved my credit generation probs at the time, this build was overkill but seems to have done very well in this game for the AI, recovering from crushing defeats by both Yith and Devourers) -> Spawn (which is easy to manage, researches, fights and expands quite well).

The war vs the Yithians would be decided by three further battles at Unseen:

Image
2nd Unseen, the Yithians bring up reinforcements and pincer me, forcing my fleet to abandon the attempt to lift the siege of The Hidden, former grey Shroud capital world. After the horrendous losses suffered earlier, I had withdrawn my cruisers from frontline service.

Image
After reforming my fleet and adding the cruisers back into the assault force (this was an all-out effort, I´d lose my 24 Xenomorph armies on the planet if the Yithians took it, for all I knew they might be bringing Psy Warriors and actually stand a chance in ground combat, what with the extended orbital bombing.

I lost all of the cruisers in the extended brawl that followed as I found out they could not be protected from enemy strike craft. My torpedo corvettes failed badly as the enemy brought sufficient fighters and AA to get 95% of the Devastator torps that had been my mainstay, and the Whirlwind decoy/saturation missiles I had been bringing were ineffective. Only the Kinetic Artillery destroyers were deadly as always.

This called for a refit:
Image
Gauss Cannon corvette to get in fast, provide targets and whittle down shields.

Image
Fighter-Carrier with a spinal mount Arc Emitter, Kinetic Art and close def weaponry

Image
Introducing the PLASMABITCH assault cruiser, a high speed, high yield design to melt down enemies stripped of their shields by the escorts and destroyers.

Image
The 4th battle of Unseen, my make-do effort utilizing what destroyers I had left since the surviving escorts from 3rd Unseen were headed for rearmament, Gauss for torps.

Image
This would break the Yithians, with both my coaltion and the United Feds which had DOWed them as well extracting huge territories.

Image
MY ally Qlank Entity and his vassals in red, Earthers and Earther proxies in blue, and I gained a nice forward operations base.

Image
Close-up of the contested area, earlier battles vs the Dorbolans at Lyctabon, Yithian war centered on Unseen, allied Tibbacor my staging area for both wars.

So.. was the "Yith" name created by you? Or was it one of the random gen names that come with the game?

I want to get back to playing Stellaris sometime, but I'm going to wait for the DLC to hit a good sale. At the rate the DLCs are coming out, it may be awhile yet. :|

Own creation, setup for the game was large map (800 stars), forced hyperlanes, three fallen empires, custom Yith, Devourers, Traders, Shroud, Techlords of Dune (heh), rest random empires for a total of 12 AI players. I got very lucky by spawning between Qlak and Devourers, the former liked me and caused no trouble despite my land grabs, the latter was at war with all other neighbours and hive mind can easily EASILY absorb other hive mind pops.

On the names, with enough effort, one could go quite deep on proper planet/ship/leader names, Lovecraft, Dune or whatever.

Playing a hive mind, I sort of went for the last DLC in this game, and it proved a strong choice. I have since started another one using the Star Trek: New Horizon mod, running the Borg as Driven Assimilators with to get a feel for the bew DLC´s machine empires.

The Borg are completely OP though

FTL Rework
The single biggest design issue we have had to tackle in the Stellaris team since release is the asymmetrical FTL. While it's a cool and interesting idea on paper, the honest truth is that the feature just does not fit well into the game in practice, and blocks numerous improvements on a myriad of other features such as warfare and exploration, as well as solutions to fundamental design problems like the weakness of static defenses. After a lot of debate among the designers, we finally decided that if we were ever going to be able to tackle these issues and turn Stellaris into a game with truly engrossing and interesting warfare, we would have to bite the bullet and take a controversial decision: Consolidating FTL from the current three types down into a primarily hyperlane-based game, with more advanced forms of FTL unlocked through technology.

...

Mentioned this approach (forced hyperlanes), that jump drive tech is in the game anyways, and can trigger one of the end-game crises if you go that way.

Must-have for the intergalactic war I posted earlier. Deployed it as soon as real wars started.
It´s a good idea IMO, for the exact reasons mentioned by Paradox.

Thread is @123 pages as of now, in under 40 hours. Multiple mental meltdowns. Skimmed just only briefly, some bizarre reactions.

Forced hyperlanes official, hah!! 8-)

Ohh, yes.

It's like someone dropped a nuke on both the Paradox forums and the Steam forums. I read the dev diary twice and knew that this was going to get ugly with a chunk of their fan base. It did not disappoint. There are some lucid, valid arguments going on in the cacophony of mud-slinging threads but...man, it's like a chunk of Paradox fans are five-years olds who were just told that Santa Clause doesn't exist.

The handful of people thinking they can somehow sue Paradox for false advertising (or something like that) is somehow fascinating as well as being hilariously retarded.

Personally, I think it's a great idea and quite ballsy for Paradox to gut a core feature of their game so they can make it better in the long run. It's going to hurt them in the short term but I think they can pull it off. Stellaris has is quirks but I think Paradox are heading in the right direction.
