Pretty good watch. Poor old Nagumo.

I was looking for a good thread on this board with "Japan" in the title, but got bored skimming through thread titles after about 10 pages.

Bit OT, but . . . by counterpoising it does put into perspective just how astoundingly far "we have come" these past ~74 years!

Got a 'buddy' my C++ Youtube mentor, Canadian guy probably about 10 or 15 years younger than me. Canadian Comp Sci whiz. At some point, he decided to head off to Japan and has been there for many years, maybe a decade or more. Got married (I presume to a Japanese woman) last year.

Imagine if this post WWII dynamic prevailed for Free World Power relations with Russia and China too ;)

Thoughts like that make me think that Patton and MacArthur were right about going for the big one(s) . . .

In 1946 the USA could have annihilated Russia even w/o a refurbished Wehrmacht's assistance. USA had 9 nuclear weapons ready to be "deployed". Russia had 0. They'd have been crushed obviously.

Regarding Midway vs Japan, the Japanese weren't unlucky, they had a shitty plan and even their own wargaming predicted a terrible loss if US CVs showed up. Especially in the wrong place at the wrong time. Guess what place and time US CVs showed up  Not just 2 of im, 3 of im. One had been emergency repaired and showed up.

plus our codebreakers knew what they were planning.

"the Japs are going to strike Midway from this direction. We'll have our CVs placed here, and we'll give im a hard spanking"

Take heed when your enemy broadcast on an open unencrypted radio frequency that the water condenser at their base is not working.

Arrogance, ethnocentrism, and lack of solidarity were, in that order of importance, the most important factors leading to the defeat of the all the WWII fascists (to include the Japanese).

But then again, the Soviets did okay despite being arrogant, ethnocentric and lacking in solidarity! When you have to have special infantry formations which come behind the main battle formations and shoot anyone who retreats, and when Generals are summarily executed for showing any hint of disobedience or caution that is pretty clear sign of "lack of solidarity" in my books!

I might even to so far as to say that arrogance, ethnocentrism and lack of solidarity were what defeated the U.S. in our various failed military adventures post WWII, though the lack of solidarity was generally more at the societal level than within the military.

Coming soon to a theater near you.....

I hope that Hollywood don't fuck this up like they did the 2001 movie "Pearl Harbor".

Hmmmm....it looks like we may actually be blessed with 2 different movies involving the Battle of Midway:

Dauntless (2019)

Hmm . . . fingers crossed (on both hands) but honestly neither one looks very promising. Too much use of action sequence and pretty leads to actually convey the subtle bases for triumph in that battle.
