It is true. Women loved Prince's music. Never quite got that. You turn on "Purple Rain" and they all stop what they are doing and get this joyful look and start singing together. Damndest thing.

It was the third of September
That day I'll always remember, yes I will
'Cause that was the day that my daddy died
I never got a chance to see him
Never heard nothin' but bad things about him
Momma I'm depending on you to tell me the truth
Momma just hung her head and said, son
Papa was a rolling stone
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died, all he left us was alone
Papa was a rolling stone (my son, yeah)
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died, all he left us was alone
Hey Momma!
Is it true what they say that Papa never worked a day in his life
And Momma, some bad talk goin' round town sayin' that
Papa had three outside children
And another wife, and that ain't right
Heard some talk Papa doing some storefront preachin'
Talking about saving souls and all the time leechin'
Dealing in dirt, and stealing in the name of the Lord
Momma just hung her head and said
Papa was a rolling stone (my son)
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died, all he left us was alone
Hey Papa was a rolling stone (dad gumma it)
Where ever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died, all he left us was alone
Hey Momma
I heard Papa called himself a jack-of-all-trades
Tell me is that what sent Papa to an early grave
Folks say Papa would beg, borrow, steal
To pay his bills
Hey Momma
Folks say Papa never was much on thinking
Spent most of his time chasing women and drinking
Momma I'm depending on you to tell me the truth
Momma looked up with a tear in her eye and said, son
Papa was a rolling stone (well, well, well, well)
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died, all he left us was alone (lone, lone, lone, alone)
Papa was a rolling stone
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died, all he left us was alone
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died, all he left us was alone
My daddy was
Papa was a rolling stone (yes he was, yeah)
Wherever he laid his hat was his home)

Stairway to Heaven is not a make-out song. Musically, it is an interesting piece of music but the thing has been played 100,000,000,000,000 times on radio. I can't stand it. ;)

Perhaps if I had some pleasant association around the song but there was no way I was going to get laid in 1971

I actually think it is a breakup song.

I happened to be listening to it once after a breakup and it suddenly made sense to me: the song is about a woman who wants to trade up for something better.

Trading up...

See hypergamy, especially at...

Stairway was what played at our high school dance in 1980. Pretty sure I hadn't discovered deodorant yet which might explain a few things.

About the same cost as beer and lower on the priority list...at least in high school.

Not exactly a makeout song, but certainly something to get the pussies moist . . .

I joke to my wife that this is my little Papillon dog's personal theme song :P

Another on the women melt list, but not on the usual suspects list. My wife, and the last girl friend before wife, loved Toto and this song (I am so old). Africa by Toto...vid is a cover done by a band called Weezer (don't ask, I don,t know), but a very young babe fan grew up hearing Africa in her home. She became a Weezers fan and started a social network request to cover the song. Apparently it worked....Africa covered by Weezer....another one of those wife things.............
