There was a time between the stagecoach and airplanes that people and goods traveled on the rails, even bums rode the rails.

I remember the nites in the '40s watching the passenger trains passing by my uncle's place, the people in the brightly lite carriages, reading, sleeping, and some eating.

Songs about the railroad were heard everywhere those days.

Then came the airplane.

True passenger rail (excluding commuter trains for short trips from 'burbs' to city is pretty much dead in most of the United States.
All that is left is Amtrak and unless you ride the Northeast Corridor you are generally pretty limited to travel.

I think the only time in my life that I ever road Amtrak was once when I was a kid.
The family was on a day trip up to Wisconsin.
We had some auto trouble and the car had to get towed back to a repair shop in Chicago.
The tow truck only had enough room for my mom, sister and brother. My dad and I had to take the train back to Chicago and the closest train route was Amtrak.

At some point the rail companies just stopped giving a fuck.

And when you don't move forward you are going to get left behind.

Maybe rail traffic for passengers can be rejuvenated by new tech - which is being developed and implemented in the East; China and Japan.

For me personally the 200kph train is a no-brainer whenever I need to go south. Half the roads are 80kph and filled with slow idiotic drivers and big trucks with no place to pass them.
Even the fuel for the car costs more than the ticket. I much prefer having my own personal cabin where I can work for the trip that takes less than half the time it takes with a car and just have a taxi waiting for me when I arrive so I can keep working.
