Of course it goes to WW2. The US and USSR were once brothers in arms. Now even the dogmatic leftists tell us to hate Russians.

Before 2008 many praised McCain for being the “Maverick” when he resisted Pres. Bush. Suddenly when he was running against Obama those same people ripped him.

And now, when he criticized Trump some of those same people praise McCain

Politics and the media is full of hypocrites.

I just wonder does this 'reinterpreting' of military history extend to WWII?

I am just curious.

Because I don't know anything of the kind in Finland; once brothers in arms, always brothers in arms. Never mind the political differences later on.

'reinterpreting', or I think a better term is 'questioning' the actions of generals, other service members and other countries has been going on for ages.

Gen. Douglas MacArthur has long been criticized for various things that he did during his militray career:

10 Reasons General Douglas MacArthur is a Jerk

That criticism started long before WW2 ever started (for his actions against the Bonus Army).
He was criticized by his own troops during WW 2:
Quote:
A song, sung to the tune of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," turned up at Bataan:

Dugout Doug MacArthur lies ashaking on the Rock

Safe from all the bombers and from any sudden shock

Dugout Doug is eating of the best food on Bataan

And his troops go starving on.

Dugout Doug's not timid, he's just cautious, not afraid

He's protecting carefully the stars that Franklin made

Four-star generals are rare as good food on Bataan

And his troops go starving on.

Dugout Doug is ready in his Kris Craft for the flee

Over bounding billows and the wildly raging sea

For the Japs are pounding on the gates of Old Bataan

And his troops go starving on...

And he was criticized (and eventually fired) by President Truman during the Korean War.

Was MacArthur swiftboated for political reasons after the war or was he criticized what he did during the or or even before the war?

That is the difference. ;)

PS. I am aware that MacArthur had a big ego, a planet size.

President Truman quote from 1951:

Quote:
“I fired MacArthur because he wouldn’t respect the authority of the president. I didn’t fire him because he was a dumb son of a bitch, although he was.”

― Harry S. Truman

To pinpoint the date see this link:

Truman also later apparently said this:

Quote:
The book, by Merle Miller, was based on taped-recorded interviews made with Truman in the 1960s.

In one chapter, Miller provided Truman’s response when asked why he decided to fire General MacArthur.

Truman’s salty answer soon became a famous quote.

“I fired him because he wouldn’t respect the authority of the President…I didn’t fire him because he was a dumb son of a bitch, although he was, but that’s not against the laws for generals. If it was, half to three-quarters of them would be in jail.”

So Truman not only ripped MacArthur but the majority of generals as well.

To fire someone for stupidity is not legal reason, but insubordination is. ;)

At an age now where it's unpleasant to see how many ppl I like are buying the farm.

Next it'll be Jimmi, then BB King. And then the dominoes just start tipping over. Too sad to think about.

Burt Reynolds gone, he and I were born on same day back in 1936, him in Fla and me in Calif.

The day of birth is the only thing we had in common.

Did enjoy his movies.

RIP

IMO, his best role was in Striptease (1996).

And he was right, walking around with boots filled with Vaseline is ...

Bet Vaseline sales skyrocketed after that movie.
