Finally some interesting cyberpunk popping up on Netflix.

From what I understand, it's based on a series of novels..?

Thx for the tip. This time I will read the novel first. Will let you know if it has any merit.

Someone told me it's pretty good. Another said it's kinda dark. But who wouldn't expect that from a neo-noir story like that?

I should add it to my list, too, but haven't been making much progress on my novel consumption lately.

Not really interested,

But films I ain't interested in often turn out to be a favorite.

After around 1/3 to 1/2 of the novel I am dissatisfied. Hack writing that uses a lot of noir and scifi tropes. As usual a sure sign is the lazy wiriting describing things instead of showing them and letting the reader figure it out. Another is pointless scenes. E.g. the protagonist goes shopping and muses philosophically about it. Seriously?

So far into the book the plot has not really taken of. Thee is no suspense to the case. For a time it runs a circle between two places instead of driving through them and getting on with it.

I also get no feel for any character and fail to care for any of them.

Then, of course, there are the usual little mistakes about facts quickly acquired, but the author still lacking in depth knowledge of the topic. E.g. "Mannlicher-Schönauer" is a model (the name of the two engineers), not a make or company. The rifle was produced by Steyr. And I suppose the term is in this dreadful penny because it appears in Hemingway's works and bio.

The novel furthermore misses the chance the exposition offers to be social commentary and does not go beyond the surface of what it would mean to be able to live forever. If you got a taste for it and are wealthy.

It frosts me this is getting made into a TV show. Hollywood and TV land must really be low on raw material.

Tried to watch it recent like . . . Feb release ;(

Maybe if the book is mediocre as Reinald is revealing, the show might be good?

Yep, different plot than the novel. E.g. the Kovacs of the novel is a "company man" and never rebelled against the UN. He also was on stack only for a few years, not 250.
