Winter War

French language low budget war movie. "Re-enactor style"...

It does not have the "small unit behind enemy lines" problem, and much of the equipment looks the part but the pyro-technic budget was minimal. Lots of crying and complaining French paratroopers. A few tough Americans of the 63rd Infantry Division (all speak perfect French from what I can tell) become solid comrades in arms with the French while clashing with a few Germans in the woods outside Jebsheim, Colmar region. No Tiger tanks on the German side. The Germans always suffer more losses during fighting and they die neatly after being hit. The French tend to be wounded a lot. Global warming probably made it difficult to shoot with snow on the ground because it looks like a Swedish summer for most of the movie. French troops complain about freezing but sit around in shallow foxholes (use pine tree branches to sit on Frogs!) or refuse to wear smart winter garments like a warm, soft hat at night. A few wear white covers on their helmets or white type parkas even though there is basically no snow on the ground - the counterproductive aspect of this was known even before WWII (I have read it in manuals from the 30s where it is pointed out as a no-no), hard to belive it would be ignored by seasoned troops.

It is claimed to be - 21 C, but troops appear to have no problems with being without gloves or hats...

Despite being pretty pro-Allied/French-US cooperation (the French thank the Americans etc) - I think even mdiehl will find it "meh". If you read Gerald Astor's oral history of the US 517th PRCT you'll find that American paratroopers were somewhat disgusted with the unsoldierlike apperance of their French counterparts...

Talk about picking a stupid name, considering Winter War was a separate conflict during the same bloody war in which Finns unlike French fought a superior enemy without surrendering unlike the French.

In -21 C I fetch the mail in tank top and flip flops. Sometimes going in the deep fresh snow with them. It's refreshing enough.

It's easy to go around without gloves for an hour or so in that temp. What I'm more interested in is the moisture and wind. -0C can be a lot worse than -25C if there's a strong continuous wind and a lot of moisture. If it's dry and relatively low wind or intermittent wind then it's no problem.

In fact during a real winter a -20C day can feel warm. After spending a lot of time in -40C I would often need to take hat, gloves and coat off in -20C if I was doing something other than crying and whining about there being a winter in a country where there's a winter every year.

On the other hand, -0C on the coast can be brutal and punishing.

Kam - the French will beat you if you go to war against them in a tank top and flip flops when it's -21 C.

It's a good thing that you're the general and I'm not. Thank you for this amazing insight. I will relay it to FDF Center for Development of Training where I served.

Do you have any tips on how we can beat the French in winter? I have now:
- No tank top
- No flip flops

Here's another one:

0 C is not brutal and punishing if you are dressed for it. ;)

The same goes with -30°C. ;)

I know.
