Saw this last week having scooped up a DVD for two bucks. This is a very good prequel to The Thing (1982) by John Carpenter. Both are well grounded in John Campbell's novella Who Goes There? and bear no relationship to the (awful) The Thing from Another World (starring a bunch of C-list never-heard from again actors, with James Arness as the title monster, 1951).

The Thing (2011) stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane, an excellent psychodrama with John Goodman), and has a strong cast of supporting actors. I was pleased to see Christopher Hivju (aka Tormund Giantsbane in Game of Thrones) and Eric C. Olsen (NCIS Los Angeles) as supporting actors.

Watch through the end of the credits to see how The Thing (2011) artfully seques into The Thing (1982)

I liked it.

One of the few latter day prequels that didn't suck.

Dunno why some people bag on it. I think it was primarily due to their disliking some of the CGI. Which replaced reportedly great practical effects they originally shot for the movie.

I've not seen comparisons, but people have said that the original practical effects were often better than the CGI which some dithering producer types demanded replace the original shots.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed the movie even with the CGI (and not knowing about that controversy when I watched). Thought it actually stayed true to the original, for the most part.
