Watched the first episode of The Expanse last night on SyFy.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3230854/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Started off pretty damn good. SyFy has recently been making some decent Sci-Fi series this past year, and this is supposed to be the most expensive one.

Fortunately the story is based on a series of books (which are supposed to be pretty good). The first book covering this first season. Good old-fashioned sci-fi. *applause*

Second episode is on tonight. :)

You can watch the first episode online, from SyFy's site:

Evidently first four episodes are temporarily available on SyFy's site & On Demand.

I binge-watched them the other night.

I've also seen the first 4 episodes. Pretty good so far...warrants waiting around to see episode 5.

This show is fucking awesome. Best thing in a long time. Love it, guys, support it! We need 10 seasons of this. The plot raw material in the books would carry that easily and the writers and are not even done with the novel series. Some stuff in the books may be extremely costly to put on film though, like whole planets going bust. We will see if SyFy has pockets deep enough or if they will work around it well. Good to see they are climbing upwards in class anyhow.

Did I mention the books series by the same name is awesome too? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Expan ... _series%29

Among the other places mentioned here the pilot is also available free&legal on youtube:

Characters are so well painted and interesting I do not even have a favorite one. Amos and Avasarala are great hardasses in their own way though, might be my favorite two. Cannot wait for them to meet, if they ever will. Amos has a sexual history with older women (as told in the Expanse-universe novella The Churn), so this could get interesting.

Watched the pilot, not happy with the characterization of the space crew.

At 13:16 they've got a guy getting his arm stitched up in the mess hall, while other members of the crew are eating.

Know these guys are rough, tough North Sea Tiger types but that ain't in character. Yes, they might stand around commenting on the quality of the stitching, but eating a meal.

Interesting. I interpreted the scene diferrent: medical science progressed so much that such a horrible wound is like a broken finger in our days and does not warrant much concern.

You were a sailor once or close to the industry or navy?

An Electronic tech, worked with Roughnecks in the North Sea, Persian Gulf, and some other places. The ship made me think of roughnecks.

Roughnecks are strange, would happily beat me into hamburger meat if I looked wrong, while buddies are standing around commenting 'He had it coming.' Then 15 minutes later shedding a tear because a kitten died. Tiny bit like motorcycle gangers with bunches of John Wayne ethic tossed in. There should be studies of them, like cowboys, and other outsiders. A lot of it was family and friendships over generations.

Wasn't a roughneck, just around them.

Felt the ship's captain ignoring the SOS over bonuses was wrong, guys in their position know they may be the next SOS, can see headquarters telling them to ignore it and them ignoring headquarters. On the Alcan there was/is a law sez you must pick up stranded motorists.

Sort of like the 'Code of the West'. ;)

Pretty sure it stated a vast majority of such automated 'SOS' signals were just traps set up by pirates. Hence the tendency to avoid them.

I know it said so in the book, too.

Sounds like you're projecting too much.
