Estonia in WW2:

Kill your neighbor. Don't kill the guy next to him. Kill the guy hiding in the woods. Don't kill the guy hiding next to him. Practice singing. It will come in handy in a few decades.

Coke '44. Rare footage of the M4A3 bottle opener.

I just watched the movie. I kind of liked it.

The Tannenberg line (Sinimäet) did hold long enough to help us to hold our line in Ihantala, Vuosalmi, Viipurin lahti and Ilomantsi.

Kamo, watch the movie in Yle areena; one week available.

The other thing was that Russians took Estonians to their side, Germans took Estonians to SS to fight in Ukraine. But then some walked over the frozen sea to Finland to fight the enemy.

The foot of bigger powers always step on smaller peoples.

But not here. No more.

Finland 100 years.

The difference with Finland and Estonia was that Finns were fighting for Finland. Just unlike the Estonians, they were recruited to to SS and fought in Ukraine. But some escaped to Finland. I have seen one inlive in Estonia 1995. I was cycling in Estonia and the old timer gave a map.

The movie shows what happens what will happen when the line breaks.

But then if you are fighting in your army, for your country, makes a difference.

Our line did hold, no Russian occupation, no communism.

It's an Estonian war movie. Estonia was occupied by both the USSR and Nazi Germany during WWII. At least one poster on this board probably thinks the Soviet occupation was justified because he thinks Estonia was a traditional part of the Russian Empire and Estonia could only be expected to deploy token forces in support of US operations someplace, sometime..., we do not yet know if the movie is OK or just Axis fanboism.

Estonia was invaded and occupied by Soviets twice. First they agreed to the Soviet ultimatum terms and gave them everything they wanted.

Big surprise, the only reason they wanted bases in the Baltic States was to have an easier time invading them.

And then they did something communists weren't supposed to be able to do - started a programme of ethnic replacement, sending local ethnicities to Siberia to die in "work makes you free" happy-camps (totally not genocide, totally not Nazis) while replacing the population with ethnic Russians (totally not Nazis).

The democratically elected president of Estonia who accepted their ultimatum himself died in Siberia. Totally not genocide, totally not Nazis.

Just go ask your rezident university styudents, communists weren't racist.

True.

Q. What is greatest country in the world?
A. Estonia. Borders on Baltic, capital in Moscow and people in Siberia.

A joke from the cold war era.

The biggest difference is probably that Finland is/was larger than Estonia...

IIRC the Estonians had only SS-Pzgren.Btl Narwa in the Ukraine which was later transformed to the Fus.Btl of the Estonian 20th Div which along saw most of its service in Estonia and later in Germany itself. Along with a bunch of lower quality Estonian units partly armed with ex French weapons. Because they were not worthy of being proper SS the Estonians had ranks with the prefix Waffen instead of SS. Their insignia included the letter E and a sword that could sort of be read as "Ei" - meaning no - which they did not like because they thought it refered to the question of Estonian independence post German victory...

"The Finnish Boys" aka JR200 was shipped away to Estonia and transfered to the Wehrmacht/Waffen SS for basically the last depserate defence of Tallin. They were not very happy about beloning to the Waffen SS and the officers kept their Finnish uniforms. Compare with for example Heimopataljoona 3 who the Finnish government handed over to the Soviets after the war (except for the few that made it to Sweden that is. Welcome to Sweden and all that).

Because the pre-war Estonian army was taken over into the Red Army there were Estonians fighting for the commies, not very reliable commie soldier material though.

Some Estonians ended up in the US Army in Germany 1945. Turns out the Yanks never recognized the Soviet claim to the Baltic states.

Some kept up a geurilla war for some time after the war ended...
