The Southern Poverty Law Center: From Klan Hunters to Multimillion-dollar Smear Machine

By bizarrely going after Sam Harris, Majid Nawaaz, and others, the once venerable organization has abandoned its core mission, focusing instead on dirty partisan politics
By Liel Leibovitz

{Snip}

In late March, the SPLC included a piece about the best-selling author in its daily Hatewatch Headlines, a compilation of media reports on bigots, thugs, and other assorted creeps. Why was the neuroscientist and prominent atheist thrown in together with Mark Anthony Conditt, the Austin bomber who had murdered two black men, and Nazi war criminal Jakiw Palij? Because Harris defended Charles Murray, a political scientist best-known for arguing that genetic differences may account for varying levels of intelligence between races. The assertion drove many in academia and journalism to label Murray a racist; he was famously shouted out of an appearance at Middlebury College last March, and was labeled a “White Nationalist” and an “extremist” by the SPLC. But when the prominent Harvard geneticist David Reich echoed Murray’s ideas in a New York Times op-ed last month—arguing that “it is simply no longer possible to ignore average genetic differences among ‘races’”—Harris took several of Murray’s critics to task on Twitter, including Vox’s Ezra Klein. Klein responded in his typically obfuscating fashion, doing little to discuss the ideas at hand and a lot to strangle them with potent ideological terms. White men discussing the possibility of genetic differences between blacks and whites wasn’t science, Klein thundered—it was racism pure and simple, facts and findings be damned. The SPLC was quick to mirror this sentiment, placing Harris on its HateWatch list.

This was far from the first time that the SPLC applied the blunt force of its historic reputation to label political opponents as racists or extremists. Harris’s co-author, Majid Nawaaz, experienced the organization’s wrath as well. A former radical Islamist who spent four years in an Egyptian prison, Nawaaz abandoned his zealotry and committed his life to promoting a pluralistic and non-violent version of Islam, a mission that led him to serve as an advisor to three British Prime Ministers. In the fall of 2016, however, Nawaaz was placed on the SPLC’s list of “anti-Muslim extremists,” widely disseminated with the header “a journalist’s manual.” His sins, according to the list, included sharing a cartoon of Jesus and Muhammad on Twitter and visiting a London strip club. You hardly have to be a scholar to realize that neither is particularly convincing evidence that Nawaaz, himself a practicing Muslim, is some sort of bigot. Joining him on the list was Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a victim of female genital mutilation in her native Somalia and an outspoken campaigner against the practice, as well as others, like child marriage and honor killings, common throughout the Islamic world.

Rightly enraged, Nawaaz threatened to sue, and the SPLC quietly removed the list. When questioned about the removal by the National Review last week, the SPLC refused to comment.

Didn't know SPLC had such a sterling history, but they've lost their way in recent years..

PragerU CEO: 'We Would Be Fools or Blind to Not Be Nervous About Being on the SPLC's Hate List'
By Tyler O'Neil June 7, 2018

On Thursday, the leftist attack dog Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) launched the first direct salvo against PragerU, the conservative nonprofit behind hundreds of short videos explaining conservative ideas. The SPLC is most notorious for its list of "hate groups," especially after a terrorist targeted the Family Research Center (FRC) using that very list. Internet companies like Google have taken to using the SPLC list to censor "hate groups," and PragerU is suing Google over YouTube censorship.

"They claim to be a hate watch group, but they're actually a hate group," PragerU CEO Marissa Streit told PJ Media in an interview on Thursday. "They cannot tolerate opposing ideas. All that matters to them is that we come up with information and ideas they don't agree with and therefore we're bad."

Citing the terrorist attack on FRC, Streit confided to PJ Media that PragerU is "nervous" about responding to the SPLC's attacks. "We know that we have reasons to be scared, because we have seen what happened to our friends at FRC," she said. "What do we need to do to feel safe in America to voice our opinions which may be contrary to what the SPLC is allowing us to say?"

"We would be fools or blind to not be nervous about being on the SPLC's hate list," Streit confided. Even so, the conservative nonprofit is determined to stand for American values, no matter the opposition.

"America is about sharing ideas, it's about allowing people to voice their ideas even if you don't agree with them. If we don't fight for this very basic American right, then we lose America as we know it," the CEO declared.

"Are we nervous, do we think it's dangerous to confront the SPLC for what they're doing? Absolutely. But we also feel like we have no other choice," Streit declared. "It's the same reason we're suing Google. Somebody has to do it, or we'll lose everything."

Last October, PragerU sued Google and YouTube for "intentionally" censoring conservative speakers on the massive video platform. YouTube restricted access to more than 40 of PragerU's videos, while leaving similar videos — and videos more offensive than PragerU's videos — unrestricted. In March, a federal judge struck down the suit, but the conservative nonprofit appealed the case to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

It turned into a money machine profiteering off Identitarian politics awhile back.

After getting a taste of all those greenbacks the naive idiots were willing to pour into race-baiting, they quickly switched over to taking their money and hiding it in off-shore accounts for their own enrichment. Meanwhile inciting more hostility which, in turn, makes their bottom line grow even more.

The ADL, and other similar orgs, are likewise profiting off their stoking of identity enmities and playing internal groups off one another. There is probably a good term for such conflict-creating profiteers, but I can't think of it at the moment.

SPLC Apologizes, Pays Settlement to Islamic Reformer It Wrongly Labeled ‘Anti-Muslim Extremist’

By JACK CROWE
June 18, 2018 11:33 AM

The Southern Poverty Law Center has reached a settlement with liberal Islamic reformer Maajid Nawaz and his organization, the Quilliam Foundation, for wrongly including them on its now-defunct list of “anti-Muslim extremists.”

The SPLC announced Monday that it has agreed to pay Nawaz and Quilliam $3.375 million “to fund their work to fight anti-Muslim bigotry and extremism.” The settlement was the result of a lawsuit Nawaz filed in April over his inclusion on the SPLC’s “Field Guide to Anti-Muslim Extremists.”

The list, which was published in 2016 and was intended to serve as a resource for journalists, was deleted shortly after Nawaz filed the suit. The deletion came roughly two years after Nawaz first demanded a retraction.

“The Southern Poverty Law Center was wrong to include Maajid Nawaz and the Quilliam Foundation in our Field Guide to Anti-Muslim Extremists. Since we published the Field Guide, we have taken the time to do more research and have consulted with human rights advocates we respect,” SPLC president Richard Cohen said in a statement. “We’ve found that Mr. Nawaz and Quilliam have made valuable and important contributions to public discourse, including by promoting pluralism and condemning both anti-Muslim bigotry and Islamist extremism. Although we may have our differences with some of the positions that Mr. Nawaz and Quilliam have taken, they are most certainly not anti-Muslim extremists. We would like to extend our sincerest apologies to Mr. Nawaz, Quilliam, and our readers for the error, and we wish Mr. Nawaz and Quilliam all the best.”

The list prompted backlash from free-speech advocates and the creation of a petition on Change.org, which drew thousands of signatures. It accused Nawaz, a liberal Muslim and former Islamic extremist, of “savaging Islam,” and similarly branded Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali- and Muslim-born critic of the religion, as an “extremist” for advocating the abolition of cultural practices like female genital mutilation, which she herself was subjected to in childhood.

“It’s a shame that it took impending litigation for the Southern Poverty Law Center to finally set
the record straight and admit it was wrong all along,” Megan Meier, a partner at Clare Locke — the law firm that represented Nawaz, said in a statement provided to National Review. “Quilliam and Mr. Nawaz do admirable work, and we are honored to have restored their reputations and achieved this victory on their behalf.”

So the SPLC refused to remove this man and his organization from their "extremist list" when he first brought this to their attention----only 2 years later after a lawsuit and being forced to cough up $3.75 million did they remove him from the list.

The SPLC is one profiteering slander machine that needs to be litigated out of existence.

Slimeballs.

Yes, only in the NewSpeak Left is an educated, Brooks Bros suit-wearing reformist Muslim who offers thoughtful SELF CRITICISM of Islam a "hatemonger". The guy is quite brilliant. I'm sure he could be everyone at SPLC in Scrabble.

This is EXACTLY the kind of guy which islam needs to move out of the 8th century.

There is not one chance in a billion that a critic of the Catholic Church, for example, would be labeled "Catholicophobe".
