Taleb, Nassim N., Skin in the Game: Hidden Asymmetries in Daily Life. New York City: Random House, 2018.

NB: precisely because I regard Taleb as a national treasure and have considerable respect for his work, I am not going to pull punches here. I get to do this because I have … skin in the game, and not only in Haiti[1] (where I wrote this post over the past ten days, thus the Kreyòl Ayisyen title), but in a couple-three moderately hair-raising situations back in KC, which I will relate when appropriate. Which might be never; see Matthew 6:1-4 (cited by Taleb on page 186).

Getting this out of the way—buy this book, read it, and recommend it to others. I say this very much irrespective of what might be called the Manifold-Taleb delta, which is not altogether trivial, as I will explain in some detail—again, as a sign of respect—below. Immediately below, in fact.

So you are fed up starting threads that get posts only from you. Poor Andy. :(

But explain how your post is about global warming and climate change?

As for starting threads that get input from me and no one else.

I post items that interest me, I don't post items to stir up the mob (troll).

Example; Reactionary Prophet, a bit from Niel Ferguson's Civilization that shows the difference between Jefferson and Burke, Jefferson was all for the Voltaire/Rousseau model early on during the French Revolution, Burke was against it. Burke was right.

Thank God Jefferson wasn't around for the drafting of our Constitution.

PS. I do read your threads, actually every thread. You are a good chap, old boy. ;)
PPS. I promise to contribute, if you post something interesting.

Quite right. Breitbart's climate denial O'Keefe, James Delingpole hits again.

This time he gets his ideas from RealClear Markets' Aaron Brown (not climate scientists, not a scientist). Sadly in current post truth times the old truths are abandoned.

You are entitled to your opinion. But you are not entitled to your own facts. -- Daniel Patrick Moynihan

Interesting enough Delingpole quotes this:

Aaron Brown wrote:
From February 2016 to February 2018 (the latest month available) global average temperatures dropped 0.56°C. You have to go back to 1982-84 for the next biggest two-year drop, 0.47°C—also during the global warming era. All the data in this essay come from GISTEMP Team, 2018: GISS Surface Temperature Analysis (GISTEMP). NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (dataset accessed 2018-04-11 at https://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/). This is the standard source used in most journalistic reporting of global average temperatures.

The 2016-18 Big Chill was composed of two Little Chills, the biggest five month drop ever (February to June 2016) and the fourth biggest (February to June 2017). A similar event from February to June 2018 would bring global average temperatures below the 1980s average. February 2018 was colder than February 1998.

But does not quote this:

Aaron Brown wrote:
None of this argues against global warming. The 1950s was the last decade cooler than the previous decade, the next five decades were all warmer on average than the decade before. Two year cooling cycles, even if they set records, are statistical noise compared to the long-term trend. Moreover, the case for global warming does not rely primarily on observed warming; it has models, historical studies and other science behind it. Another point is both February 1998 and February 2016 were peak El Niño months so the record declines are starting from high peaks—but it's also true that there have been many other peak El Niño months in the past century and none were followed by such dramatic cooling.

Just because Delingpole just argues against global warming.

As I see, and I am not a climate scientist, and not a scientist, that Aaron Brown is cherry picking some colder periods. The GISS annual average data shows that 2016 was the warmest year ever measured, and 2017 the second warmest year even no El Ninjo.

This year may be warmer, may be cooler. But the warming trend goes on...

I will post the most sarcastic refutation to this fake news in a week max.

The sad thing is that many people buy this kind of BS, like many other lies...

Go to the end of the first article:
Quote:
This brings projected “global warming” from being potentially dangerous to being easily manageable. Which is why, of course, it is unlikely to get much attention from a scientific establishment and a complicit media that much prefers to ramp up the global warming scare – even when the evidence doesn’t support it.
IMHO it doesn't say 'no global warming', it sez it's manageable and in my opinion, it's manageable without destroying the world economies.
