Scientists: 30 Years On, How Well Do Global Warming Predictions Stand Up?

Climatologist Dr. Pat Michaels and Meteorologist Dr. Ryan Maue:

"Thirty years of data have been collected since Mr. Hansen outlined his scenarios—enough to determine which was closest to reality. And the winner is Scenario C. Global surface temperature has not increased significantly since 2000, discounting the larger-than-usual El Niño of 2015-16. Assessed by Mr. Hansen’s model, surface temperatures are behaving as if we had capped 18 years ago the carbon-dioxide emissions responsible for the enhanced greenhouse effect. But we didn’t. And it isn’t just Mr. Hansen who got it wrong. Models devised by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have, on average, predicted about twice as much warming as has been observed since global satellite temperature monitoring began 40 years ago..."

"Several more of Mr. Hansen’s predictions can now be judged by history. Have hurricanes gotten stronger, as Mr. Hansen predicted in a 2016 study? No. Satellite data from 1970 onward shows no evidence of this in relation to global surface temperature. Have storms caused increasing amounts of damage in the U.S.? Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration show no such increase in damage, measured as a percentage of gross domestic product. How about stronger tornadoes? The opposite may be true, as NOAA data offers some evidence of a decline. The list of what didn’t happen is long and tedious."

James Hansen issued dire warnings in the summer of 1988. Today earth is only modestly warmer.

A few words of French does not make Dinesh wrong. Lowering global economic growth by outlawing by far the most efficient energy source means that millions more poor people will die from contaminated water, starvation, tuberculosis, malaria, diarrhea...etc.etc.

Not sure I can see the moral high ground of the US paying for a bunch of free shit under the Paris Accord, either. We have to BORROW it and then threaten to put people in jail to take it from them. If the Saudis and Chicoms and Norwegians want to donate their sovereign wealth funds to India...fine by me.

It's only the most efficient if you ignore the costs dumped on everyone else.

The most efficient is now solar. Also, more to the point, no legions of poor people have to die. You just use a different energy source. The Chicoms are so nice I am confident that they'll give away the necessary tech for free. ;)

Really now. How do you store that energy from Mr. Sunshine?

When we have real batteries and we have the capacity to erect massive solar panels in orbit, and we have the capacity to transmit the energy down to Earth, Solar will be the best, most efficient, and fucking fantastic. Until then it is a weak, pathetic, unpredictable, impractical source of energy for anything other than powering an individual household as a supplement to being on the grid . . . assuming you live in the right type of climate zone. If you don't live in the right type of climate zone then you are fucked.

Well, the morals of that Diner are pretty questionable. Moral people don't usually have vacations in prisons. ;)

In suitable places there are mountains and water; a natural battery.
