A review of Robert Spencer’s Did Muhammad Exist? An Inquiry into Islam’s Obscure Origins
...
Yet the problem with Spencer’s approach is not the sources that he uses, but how he goes about using them. This work is fatally flawed by numerous logical fallacies and poor source criticism.
...
The issues mentioned here are only a few of the more glaring shortcomings in this work. In short, Spencer explains away the canonical story of Muhammad, the Qur’an, and early Islam, and the very figure of Muhammad himself, by throwing out the large number of supporting sources based upon poor source criticism, while offering a thinly supported revisionist picture in return. There should be no doubt there is much in the traditional story of Muhammad and the formation of Islam that is questionable. The sources we possess are few, chaotic in nature, heavily redacted, and often have an unquestionable bias, so there is much room for real source criticism, scholarly debate, and historical revisionism. But this work goes to an extreme in its disregard for proper source criticism, and its arguments have more in common with those skeptical and atheist critics of early Christianity than with the best of modern historical scholarship.

Once again you have been caught not reading through articles you quote. ;)

So it goes.

Somehow I got an impression that you support the view that Spencer presented. The article you linked just criticized Spencer in many ways. I think that it odd to link an article like that.

Ho hum.

 Check the first post on page 5, that was my un-scholarly view.

But, even if I hadn't posted on page 5 why can't I post a pro/con review just to stimulate thought?

As before you jumped to a wrong conclusion.

IMHO Jesus, and Muhammad were real persons.

I may be an agnostic or even atheist, but I don't deny that Jesus was real historical fact. The same with Mohamed.

I have been a Christian by tradition and by teaching. And I do respect much of Jesus's teaching. Much more than I know about Islam. Actually I know nothing about Islam. And why would I.

So it goes.

I agree with Nero. All historical events and people have a basis in fact..some more so than others. It is up to the individual to interpret the documentation, writings and opinions to develop their own interpretation of history. In my readings about Mohammad and Jesus, I have come to the conclusion that they may represent the same person.... that person's (or people's?) impact on spiritual and moral beliefs of millions. Am I right? Probably as right as anyone. This is a great discussion.
