Interesting analysis of the sonar audio from the Harsfiarden Incident, October 1982, by an ex-USN sonarman.

Hårsfjärden - prounouced roughly "Horsfjaerden"...

fjärd - a body of water limited by bigger or smaller island, and maybe the mainland.
fjord (fiord) - a long, narrow bay with steep cliffs on either side...

Post Cold War the Swedish assessment is that Hårsfjärden 1982 was a part of the Soviet antiRYAN operation. It took place at the same time as NATOs Northern Wedding (in the Atlantic), REFORGER (Germany) and BALTOPS and a major US naval exercise in the northern Pacific. The mission of the submarine in Hårsjärden is believed to have been the destruction of (Swedish) ships at Berga and Muskö naval base by use of atomic weapons ("atomic mine").

Two years later a test (Da Capo) was carried out in Hårsfjärden (same time of year, similar conditions - a few hundred meters reach with active hydrophone. A Swedish Sjöormen class submarine was tasked with sneaking into Hårsfjäden and lay on the bottom for a few hours. And then exiting. A surface/air search group tried to hunt down the submarine but failed to spot it. It was judged that the Swedish ASW capabilities were (totally) inadequate.

Hårsfjärden also indicates that the Swedish neutrality - still being upheld by the Swedish left as 'having served us well' - in reality offered little protection in case of a NATO-WP war.
