New China virus: Number of cases jumps as infection spreads to Beijing

Are we in danger? Or only the Chinese are concerned?

New China virus: Number of cases jumps as infection spreads to Beijing
The number of people infected with a new virus in China tripled over the weekend, with the outbreak spreading from Wuhan to other major cities.

Wuhan reported 136 new cases of the respiratory illness. The capital Beijing reported two cases, while Shenzhen confirmed one.

Total known infections now exceed 200, and three people have died.

The sharp uptick in cases comes as millions of Chinese prepare to travel for the Lunar New Year holidays.

Health officials have identified the infection, which first appeared in Wuhan in December, as being a strain of coronavirus. They say it has led to an outbreak of viral pneumonia, but much about it remains unknown.

Although the outbreak is believed to have originated from a market, officials and scientists are yet to determine exactly how it has been spreading.

South Korea reported its first confirmed case of the virus on Monday, following two in Thailand and one in Japan.

The outbreak has revived memories of the Sars virus - also a coronavirus - that killed 774 people in the early 2000s across dozens of countries, mostly in Asia.

Analysis of the genetic code of the new virus shows it is more closely related to Sars than any other human coronavirus.

Experts in the UK told the BBC the number of people infected could still be far greater than official figures suggest, with estimates closer to 1,700.

There would appear to be a legitimate concern, and the US is taking steps to address it:

Federal authorities will begin screening airline travelers arriving from Wuhan, China, for signs that they may be infected with a new coronavirus that is spreading in Asia, officials announced Friday.

Passengers flying into Los Angeles International Airport, San Francisco International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York will be examined for the virus’ pneumonia-like symptoms, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

About 100 additional CDC workers will be deployed to join existing public health staff at the three airports.

It's called "Novel Coronavirus" by the CDC.

The MERS (MIddle East Respiratory Syndrome) virus was a Coronavirus. These "novel" viruses are often thought to have emerged from animal sources and then acquired the ability to pass from person to person.

SARS was also a novel coronavirus. The Chinese will pretty much put anything in a cage and then eat it.

Cases of deadly coronavirus spike as officials confirm human-to-human spread

The outbreak comes ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday during which hundreds of millions of people are expected to travel.

Hundreds of new cases of mystery virus in China detected

Jan. 21, 2020, 5:08 AM EST / Updated Jan. 21, 2020, 8:08 AM EST

By Eric Baculinao, Dawn Liu, Yuliya Talmazan and Janis Mackey Frayer

BEIJING — The number of cases of a deadly new coronavirus climbed to close to 300 in China Tuesday as health authorities in Asia and around the world stepped up screening at airports, railway stations and on highways in an effort to stem the spread of the pneumonia-like disease.

On Monday, the head of a Chinese government expert team said human-to-human transmission of the virus had been confirmed.

Meanwhile, the number of those killed by the virus rose to six, with cases being reported outside China — including in Thailand, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.

Health officials in Australia and the Philippines are also probing suspected cases of the virus there.

Officials at China’s National Health Commission confirmed 291 cases of the disease Tuesday — 270 of them in the country’s central Hubei province, home to the city of Wuhan, which has seen the majority of the cases. The number of detected cases in China stood at 62 on Sunday.

Five of those were reported in the capital Beijing, 14 in Guangdong, in southeast China, and two more in Shanghai, a global financial hub.

Eight more cases, two in Tianjin, one in Henan province and five in Zhejiang province, were reported by local health authorities later Tuesday, bringing the number of confirmed cases to 299, although these cases are yet to be verified by the National Health Commission.

Officials said they were also looking into 54 additional suspected cases in 14 provinces of the country.

China's leading epidemiologist said Monday over 95 percent of the cases were connected with Wuhan, either going in or out of the city.

Zhong Nanshan added that 14 members of medical personnel caring for coronavirus-infected patients have been infected.

The outbreak comes ahead of the Chinese Lunar New Year in late January, during which hundreds of millions of people are expected to travel domestically and overseas.

"More cases should be expected in other parts of China and possibly other countries in the coming days," said World Health Organization (WHO) spokesman Tarik Jasarevic, according to Reuters.

At Wuhan Tianhe International Airport Tuesday, thousands of passengers were wearing face masks as authorities stepped up screening measures amid holiday travel rush.

NBC News witnessed people exiting the airport being subjected to a body temperature screening test.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia said Monday it was closely monitoring the outbreak, but the general risk for the American public was still deemed to be low.

The virus belongs to the large family of coronaviruses that can cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which killed nearly 800 people globally during a 2002-2003 outbreak that also started in China, paralyzing transport and damaging Asian economies.

The source of the outbreak is still under investigation in Wuhan, WHO said.

The agency will be holding an emergency committee meeting on Wednesday to discuss whether the virus constitutes a public health emergency of international concern, and formulate recommendations to manage the outbreak.

China's National Health Commission will also be holding a briefing on the coronavirus outbreak Wednesday.

Over the weekend, three U.S. airports started screening passengers arriving from Wuhan to prevent the spread of the virus.

The South China Morning Post newspaper reported Tuesday that Beijing warned officials against covering up the spread of the virus, saying anyone who withheld information would face severe punishment and be “nailed on the pillar of shame for eternity.”

China had initially downplayed the full extent of the SARS outbreak in 2003.

But Chinese President Xi Jinping said Monday it was "extremely crucial" to take every possible measure to combat the virus.

Eric Baculinao and Dawn Liu reported from Beijing; Janis Frayer from Wuhan; Yuliya Talmazan from London.
This sounds like a serious issue on the verge of getting even more serious.
If China has "hundreds of millions" travelling around the country within the the next week that could potentially spread the illness all over the country (and then even further) in a short period of time.

1st U.S. case of deadly new virus found in Wash. state, report says

by KOMO News StaffTuesday, January 21st 2020

A dangerous new virus that has sickened hundreds and killed six victims in China has now spread to Washington state, a federal source tells CNN.

It is the first case of the "novel coronavirus" detected in the United States, according to the source.

It is unclear if the infected person recently traveled to China, where and how they became infected, or if this person has transmitted the virus to anyone else in the United States.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to officially announce the case in a special briefing later Tuesday morning.

CDC officials said the deadly virus was first detected in Wuhan, China.

Six people have died from the virus and 291 have been infected in China, the National Health Commission said Tuesday. About 30 other cases have been detected in other Asian countries.

It seems to spread rapidly, Australia and now the US. I guess it will arrive in Europe soon.
