I was told only divisions count, a dozen men sounds a lot like a token effort to me. The Poles had a division in Normandy, not in the initial landing sure, but that was a language thing, not bravery.

If we are honest Australia has not deployed divisions to Iraq or Afghanistan. It's the same token type effort as pretty much anybody else. Bawahaha, you guys...

It was quite natural for the Australians to have most of their effort in the Pacific after Japan entered the war. They certainly sacrificed by the thousands in Malaya and New Guinea and Royal Australian Navy operated in joint task forces with the US Navy many times.

The Australians have been good allies and we to them. There is actually a USMC battalion stationed in Oz now, training with the locals.

Well....

...they did not have Germany or the Soviet Union next door - like Poland. :D

Yet no Australian divisions, not even in Korea, Vietnam.

mdiehl figures a country the size of Denmark (pop 5 million) should field a division size force to support efforts like Afghanistan to be a worthwhile ally. Australia (pop 24 million) should by that logic field about 4 to 5 divisions. :P

As far as I can tell Danish and Australian contributions in A-stan have been about the same sort of 'token effort.'

Unlike the Swedes . . . who it seems have never been a "good ally" to anyone

Sweden - stays out of military alliances (except once in a blue moon during wartime, eyy JWilk). Does not pick up others bar tab. Almost no military bases abroad. Does not defend shitholes, or ungrateful fair weather friends. Not on permanent warfooting to safe guard shmucks who go online and talk smack about Sweden.

How 'bout them apples, suckas'....

Sweden would much rather be a humanitarian superpower and allow the rest of the world to come to it.

And we should do the same.

Hopefully, after Trump is re-elected, he can pull out of NATO. I have no problem with an anti-terrorist alliance with Europe. We should, therefore, re-negotiate our alliance with Europe, and it should have another name. A repurposed NATO, as it stands right now, is like squeezing a square peg through a round hole.

We work together against terrorism and ya'll contain Russia.

Dunno that we should cooperate with continental Europe on anything at all. Cooperation inevitably means America does all the work and makes all the sacrifices while europeans watch and deride the work.

As our local spokes persons for the E.U. glory, our resident Nords have gradually brought me around to a calm acceptance and agreement with this stance. Much like China, we need them much less than they need us. Let 'em sit 'out in the cold' for a generation or two and learn some proper respect and appreciation of their Yankee benefactors :P

The U.S. firms who are "dependent" on E.U. for one thing or another, will just to have to suck it up!

Contain Russia, or welcome Russia along, I guess.

The anti-NATO, anti-EU, pro-Putin pillar against migration is the second largest party in Sweden now, reaching for the top slot. It might just go their way.

The solution to all problems must be an American withdrawal from Europe, and probably the Pacific.
