The perp did not have a machine gun. He could not mow down 20 people.

And the saviors of the day stopped him without weapons. Win - Win.

Technically they DID have weapons..they were just "dual purpose" ;)

I think Joe has demonstrated a clear cultural difference.... In some parts of the world crazy people are not executed the second they exhibit a potentially dangerous behavior .... Reminds me of that kid in Chicago..... with the knife and 16 bullet holes .....

Thing is, out here ... I don't care about 20 people ... we don't (hardly) ever have 20 people in one vicinity ... I care about 1 person most of the time ... and I'm not willing to risk the life of that person by limiting myself to fighting with a milk crate ...
:D

Its all about probabilities of victory and defeat. Apparently you feel that rules which impose on your natural born right of self-defense, decreasing your probability of victory and increasing your probability of defeat are "worth it." Most likely you feel they are "worth it" because you, like far to many millions globally, have bought into the notion that "Less Weapons == Less Violence," (and less risk) an empirical generalization with extraordinarily limited support and very problematic conceptual foundations.

The distribution of contemporary U.S. firearms rights and violence co-variations across State/County/Municipal entities is overwhelmingly contrary to this empirical generalization and we can find ample evidence across a broad range of temporal and geographic/political frames. To be sure, under SOME circumstances, namely social conditions of insurgency or low-intensity warfare, More Weapons can act as a moderating variable which contributes to more Violence. But the conceptual basis for making sense of these associations do not inherently extend to conditions of civil order and peace. But Weapons are NEVER a MEDIATING variable for violence at a group or population level. Weapons do NOT CAUSE violence in any meaningful or statistically appreciable sense. Primates, and mammals more generally, had evolved panoplies of well-oiled psychological mechanisms for the detection, execution, avoidance, deterrence and response to violence many tens of millions of years before the first WEAPON, much less the first firearm. Indeed, violence as a behavioral adaptation is likely one of the very first behaviors that early prokaryotes or archaea evolved.

Imagine if the prevailing conditions in Hong Kong these past 50 years had been more akin to Switzerland and as a result 97% of Hong Kong households included at least one adult family member who was trained as a militia, in possession of a well-secured and maintained long barrel, semi-automatic firearm and ammunition. Would the hundreds of thousands of heroes now being forced to brave beatings, arrest and death be so helpless and vulnerable? Or would China feel deterred to oppress Hong Kong at all?

Switzerland has a very high firearm count per capita and it also has some of the lowest violence rates in the world. The keys to reducing violence in any human society are social psychology and communication, as Switzerland demonstrates; "Gun Control" infringes on every human beings natural right to self-defense, and rests on empirical and conceptual fantasy.
