As far as I can tell, inexplicable mass murder is something which has ALWAYS occurred at relatively low frequencies in virtuallly all human societies; though admittedly the leaps of inference and "smushing together" of unmatching evidence pieces to create a whole picture one has to engage in to arrive at that conclusion is pretty messy.

Certainly we can be confident that serial killers have existed across a broad range of societies throughout history.

It may be that certain factors have caused (or more generally "CAN" cause) the incidence of these things to tick up or down, but as far as contemporary America goes, I have never seen any convincing evidence for such a change in incidence up or down even restricting consideration to the period for which reasonable data are at hand.

As to "why?" Does it really matter? So many possible reasons, even within one perps head, let alone across any representative sample of perps. If one had to assign a single simple "cause" I'd say "insanity" is just about all you could say with any confidence.

ADDIT: which reminds me of this story . . .
