Of course "best" would depend on some criteria.

Our criteria for picking a place to move to when we left California included:

01 - A go from place, not a go to place.
I.E. an area which is more decreasing in population than increasing.

02 - A decent sized University should be near by.
I regret this criteria, but we made the criteria in 2011. I think between us we have cover 800 semester hours of college credit and did not want to rule out taking more classes. Unfortunately, this criteria put us too close to populated areas.

03 - Low cost.
We wanted an area where the housing and land prices were low.
Unfortunately, we did not consider the property taxes in our consideration. This was a significant mistake!!

Three area were on the short list:

Ozarks, in AR or southern MO
Kansas
East Tennessee, around Knoxville

Ultimately we choose KS as we knew more people in that area. We live midway between K-State and KU. Our country has 5,900 people and 7 people per square mile. This is about the same as WY and MN.
In 1900, this country had pop. of 12,000 ...
So it fits all the criteria, but in my next life time, either NE Wyoming or North Central Montana, would be highest on my list.

The guy is more about the political environment. While important, he completely discounts almost all urban areas and seashores. Even LA and New York have nice places to live (although you will pay through the nose). For example, he is down on "Eastern Georgia" but Savannah is one of the most beautiful small cities I have ever seen.

Wyoming has no income tax. Big plus. Lots of wolves now moving down from Yellowstone. Even grizzlies. Jackson Hole is beautiful but expensive as Hell.

Montana still has lots of lower priced land.

My daughter moved from Houston to Montana about 10 years ago, she's in the process of moving back.

Bad news for Texas ... she's pure lib.

Addon

And then there's: "Today, approximately 125,000 gang members live in the city of Chicago, and they outnumber the police by more than 10 to 1. If you must live in Illinois, you probably want to stay as far away from Chicago as you can."

Shades of 'The Warriors'

Do you dig it.

I have been in Boulder Colorado. and Madison Wisconsin. Do you think that they are bad places, other than this Scott Walker in Wisconsin?

Wisconsin is God's country.

I visit every year. First thing I do is buy a quart of milk and down it in the parking lot. Will be doing it in August while you are doing your monthly beer run to Tallinn.

Nothing better in the world. I wrestle with the question of what beverage would I choose if I could choose no other. Coffee, milk, beer? When I arrive in Wisconsin I know the answer with perfect clarity. God's country.
