June 25 (UPI) -- A teenage soccer team and their coach are believed to be trapped in a flooded cave in northern Thailand as rescue efforts were underway on Monday.

The Thai Navy's Underwater Demolition Assault Unit was searching the tunnels of the Tham Luang cave in an attempt to locate the 12 boys between the ages of 13 and 16 and their 25-year-old coach, the Bangkok Post reported.

The team has been missing since Saturday. Witnesses said they saw the team enter the cave, which is a popular tourist attraction and contains winding tunnels that are several miles long and connect to other caves.

"We have been working almost 24 hours but there are many limitations, the caves are pitch dark and very low level of oxygen in some areas, and scattering rains just made our task more difficult," Kamolchai Kotcha, an official with Thailand's national parks authority, told CNN.

Low levels of oxygen.

This story isn't going to have a happy ending.

Seem OSHA safety videos about what happens to groups dealing with that sort of thing.

Spelunking underwater caves is some serious & dangerous shit.

Of course, when we're in our teens we believe we'll never die by accident. :|

Two days underground without proper bivvy gear? *shudders* Course the temps over there are likely in the 70 Fahrenheit ballpark (whereas 54, 54 in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia). I suppose one might not be too vulnerable to hypothermia in a cave in the tropics. But unless they were quite disciplined with their food, water and light, they are now sitting in complete darkness, thirsty and hungry, sore, tired and utterly sensory deprived. It is impossible to put into words the mental effect of spending even 12 or 19 hours in a cave without proper gear, and that is for people who ENJOY it. Somebody with just a passing fancy of it who is forced to sit in complete darkness for ~48 hours with nothing to drink or eat is going to be a basket case when they get to them . . . assuming they are not drowned.

I was trapped by flood waters once in Glow Worm Cave in central Tennessee; last time I listened to and followed an older caver who was less knowledgeable than me. I could tell we were doing something very stupid: going into a sinkhole plain cave after a long period of rain and with more rain in the forecast. The dambed entrance was a plumbers trap at the bottom of a sinkhole that was the drain for probably 50 acres of field or more.

Sure enough, 2 hours into the trip, not more than 10 minutes from the entrance (we were surveying it so going quite slow) it was like someone turned on a faucet! We fled to the back of the cave where we knew there was high ground and waited. After about 2 hours, we realized the water didn't seem to be coming up very much (though the entrance was sumped), so we spent a couple hours channeling the stream downstream of the entrance to help drain the plumbers trap and sinkhole above it. The owner of the land (who was also a caver) told us when we got out that the sinkhole had completely filled up, a funnel probably 30ft across at the widest (~10m). Eventually we realized the water was slowly lowering so we shifted our "camp" back closer to the entrance so that it was less distance to travel to check if it was open yet, and so we might hear would-be rescuers. Finally got out after 19 hours. It was one girls FIRST wild cave trip! She actually became quite an active caver though!

So we were lucky, that cave probably almost never floods, or hasn't for thousands of years; that was what my observation of the sediments in the big room in the back suggested to me. Just that the entrance sumps shut in high flow.

But some caves (or sections of caves), are literally death traps; they fill to the ceiling and water spouts shoot out of exit holes that are normally high and dry under certain conditions. Lots of caves in Perry County, Missouri like that: if you go in it while it floods, your chances to survive are quite slim. It just depends on what kind of situation they are in.
