What's the difference between the English team and some Thai boys?

I gather that this art of two squads of men each with a spare platoon in reserves running after a ball on a grassy field is an extremely abstracted form of ritual warfare that's widely popular in UK?

Some notes to make it more interesting:
- Encourage hitting the enemy
- Add weapons
- Add protection (so you can hit harder and with intent)
- Get rid of the ball
- Have a platoon of guys _on_ the field with a squad in reserves

The Thai boys are coming home. Also, they aren't very good at diving.

The Thai boys couldn't even swim. They were sedated and carried out.

Ben Graham wrote:

Australian cave diving expert Dr Richard Harris’ incredible story

AN AUSSIE cave diver suffered through a heartbreaking mission before he was called up to save the Thai schoolboys.

RICHARD Harris — an Aussie doctor with 30 years of cave-diving experience who put his life on the line to save the trapped Thai schoolboys — is no stranger to tragedy.

The Adelaide anaesthetist and underwater cave explorer made the treacherous journey into the chamber where the boys have been trapped underground for more than two weeks on Saturday as part of an incredible international mission to save them.

He scuba dived 4km through cold, dark and narrow passages to reach the boys and assessed them as medically fit to attempt the risky escape mission, which is still ongoing.

British divers specifically requested the talented medic for the rescue operation which has already claimed a life of one of the cave divers taking part.

However, it is not the first time Dr Harris has found himself at the centre of a tragic rescue operation.

The well-known diver was also summoned for an extremely difficult and life-threatening cave diving mission in 2011, when he was tasked with recovering the body of his mate Agnes Milowka.

The other thing is that the operation almost ended in a catastrophe when all pumps failed and lights went out when there were many rescue divers in the cave. Finnish diver Mikko Paasi reported that he and his three companions had to free dive out all the way from chamber three, 200m from where the kids were found.

Gavin Fernando wrote:
How the boys and their coach escaped the Thai cave

JUST as the last boys were being pulled from the treacherous caves, disaster struck almost derailing the precarious mission.

THE miracle rescue of the 12 Thai soccer players and their coach almost turned to catastrophe when water pumps in the 4km long cave system failed, it has emerged.

The crisis, which occurred on Tuesday, could easily had turned to disaster if rescue workers had waited any longer to extract the Wild Boar footballers.

Just moments after the last boy made it to safety from the Tham Luang caves, when at least 100 rescuers and support staff were still deep inside, the infrastructure that had saved lives began to break down putting lives at risk. Pumps that had, over the course of two weeks, expelled 200 million litres of water from the system, failed.

Channel 10 reporter Daniel Sutton described the panic that engulfed the cave.

“The cheers gave way to the sound of screaming and shouting, coming from further down in the cave system,” he said.

“The water began rising, as quickly as one centimetre per minute.

“In a flurry of spotlights, rescue workers began scrambling up the cave, slipping and sliding over rocks and makeshift stairs cut into the mud.”

Rapidly rising water levels in the cave would have made the already dangerous mission even more treacherous.

Speaking on Wednesday in Chiang Rai close to the caves, Australian Federal Police Commander Glenn McEwan said the pumps “greatly assisted” in the success of the operation.

When asked by a reporter if they had indeed failed and it was “getting close to catastrophe”, he said the Thai authorities would comment in more detail, but added: “Without going into too much complexity, there are always twists and turns in these sorts of environment.”

Despite last minute hiccups, the entire Thai cave rescue is nothing short of a miracle.
...

But of course no catastrophe can be compared with last night loss in Moscow. ;)

Wait..does that story mean they did a 200 m continuous free dive?

It must mean it was broken into segments to reach air pockets because a continuous 200 m free dive doesn't seem humanly possible but how would you know what is ahead? Jesus, that is brass balls macho.

Well, one thing I've learned from this is that cave diving is a f**king crazy pasttime. No wonder so many of them die.

Am thinking of taking it up as a pastime.

Not just the Brits, the Thais lauded everybody, especially the foreigners.

Heroes, pure heroes, all of them.
