Cruise Lines Cancel Mexican Shore Excursions after Ferry Explosion in Playa del Carmen

At least three major cruise lines have canceled shore excursions to popular tourist destinations in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula after a February 21 explosion aboard a ferry running between the Playa del Carmen and Cozumel and the subsequent discovery on March 1 of undetonated explosives on a tourist ferry operating between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel.

The explosion, which injured 19 Mexicans and at least five Americans, was initially attributed to a mechanical malfunction but is now being investigated as a much more serious incident after the U.S. State Department confirmed the blast was the result of an explosive device. A Mexican news outlet reported that the vessel "was left with a gaping hole in its starboard side next to a passenger seating area." At least one source is reporting that a suspicious man with a backpack was seen hastily leaving the ferry shortly before the explosion.

Cancun is beautiful. Great deals too. Too bad. The pyramids and cenotes and jungle at Chichen Itza are the most fantastic thing I have ever seen in my life. Blue whales, sharks, 15,000 ft peaks, London ,Paris, NY, mountain lions and grizzlies in the wild, Monet paintings...the Rosetta stone...phhht.

I’m sure that some parts of Mexico are very beautiful; but other parts are not.

I’ve travelled to some questionable places, in my youth: driven by Cabrini Green in Chicago (during daylight hours), driven through the West Side of Chicago (during daylight hours), travelled through downtown Detroit (during darkness)...all things done when I was young (and foolish).

Now that i am older I don’t like to take chances when I don’t need to.
I will not place myself, or my family at risk.

There are many beautiful and interesting places to visit in the US, and in other, safer, parts of the world.

A beautiful place... and a lot less chance of dying than a shopping trip into Orlando....

From CBS News:

Quote:
32. Orlando, Florida
The murder rate in Orlando is 5.1 per 100,000.

Those were stats for the first half of 2017
https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/murder ... cities/30/

From Wikipedia:
murders and nonnegligent manslaughter rate per 100,000 @ 2015:
Florida as a whole: 5.1 / 100,000
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_in ... s_by_state

Meanwhile in Cancun:

Quote:
Cancún’s murder rate is 20 people per 100,000 inhabitants and Los Cabos’ is 14 people per 100,000 inhabitants,

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/n ... 87707.html

For Mexico as a whole:

Quote:
The homicide rate over the first 11 months of this year, based on the number of cases opened, was 18.7 per 100,000 people, according to Animal Politico. That exceeds the previous high of 17.8 cases per 100,000, registered in 2011.

Were those numbers corrected to isolate white touristas ? You actually spent time digging up those numbers without even thinking of that ?

Please elaborate what you mean by that?

The US stats for Orlando and Florida are for the state as a whole.

The stats for Cancun, Los Cabos, and Mexico as a whole represent those cities and country.

The post that started this thread was regarding ferries running people in tourist areas.

Ferries in TOURIST areas are exploding or been found carrying explosives.
That ferry was not running in the barrio.

Travel advisory from the US Dept of State:

https://travel.state.gov/content/travel ... isory.html

There have also been warnings concerning street crimes and rape....in tourist areas.

As 1 of millions of people visiting Cancun every year, your chance of mishap is pretty close to zero.... Just like a road trip to Orlando.... The driving to Orlando being the most dangerous part....
