It is a question which representative democracies seem to be struggling with in this day and age - what do you do when you vote for someone who espouses something, but as soon as they are in office they proceed to do the precise opposite?

Voting them out again when their term is up is not really an answer, because their replacements do the exact same thing themselves! and on it goes. And it's difficult to impossible to set up a new political party in this day and age especially. And even if they do well, see Geert Wilders or the AfD or the SD, they'll be frozen out of all the corridors of power anyway without outright and unrealistic majorities.

A pretty good current example, our Chancellor Philip Hammond was selected after solemnly swearing he was a Eurosceptic to his Conservative Association. They made him say, before choosing him to be their MP, you really do believe this, right? Nowadays ofc Spreadsheet Phil is doing his utmost to put a spanner in the works of Brexit every day and has a reputation as an ardent Remainer and saboteur. WTF are the plebs supposed to do against that sort of thing?

It's not like the Left is immune either. Tony Blair is the most hated man in Britain for a reason - betrayal. Nobody likes a quisling.

I'm actually starting to think that representative democracy is near the end of its run, and we need to move more towards a Swiss model of hybrid representative/direct democracy.

Isn't Switzerland the least gun restricting western european country, too?

They always seemed to be quite defensive of their individual liberties.

Perhaps the US should vote the president by direct majority vote?

As long as you are "Swiss." If you are not Swiss, else rich and palatable (from a cultural/political/ethnic standpoint): fuck off.

I know their Romansh and other "ethnic minorities" who do a lot of the menial jobs are effectively second class citizens. Not sure if there is a pecking order among Italo versus Germanic Swiss or not, or if they are equal footing.

An admirable country but one which exemplifies certain rigid caste-system ethos and lack of social mobility about which I don't think many Americans would approve.

Ahh.

I never learned much about the Swiss government. Seemed like an odd one.

I probably know more about the place from ancient history than modern, which isn't saying a whole lot. Learning details about Switzerland was never high on my "to do" list. *shrug*

Thought we'd discussed this 'ad nauseam' before, if you don't remember the pros and cons there's always the 'search' button.

Try 'Electoral College' in google.
