In vino veritas

#1 Post by nero » Wed Nov 29, 2017 5:13 pm

As the ancient Romans used to say. The more ancient Greeks said "Ἐν οἴνῳ ἀλήθεια" (En oinōi alētheia)".

Now US government uses Project Veritas video in trial of anti-Trump protesters. But it is this right remembering the truth value of O'Keefe's sting operations and editing skills?

And more recent example is this failed WaPo stint.

Here's another saying for you:

"The camera doesn't lie."

Film footage of people being violent Commie assholes, committing crime and tearing up other peoples' shit, doesn't mean that the recorded footage is a lie if you don't like the owner of the camera.

Are you really trying to make that argument?

Yes, video footage may be edited, but experts can tell whether video footage has been edited or not.
I presume that whatever evidence may be used in court has undergone scrutiny for that, not only by the Department of Justice (as they want to be check the validity of their evidence) but also by the defense in the case.

The defense may therefore challenge whether the video has been manipulated.
The defense will have more trouble trying to show that accurate video is somehow fake.

You can ask Dan Rather about how well "fake but accurate" evidence holds up.

I have not watched any recent Project Veritas videos, but I do recall that in the past, even when they released "shortened (edited)" videos they usually also posted the original unedited videos on their website, so that any viewer could see the difference between the shortened and original versions.

Does Project Veritas use people "under cover", pretending to be someone else.
Yes, but that is not unusual.

Law enforcement does it.

Journalists and others in the press have done so.

THe Guardian article attempts to discredit PV by calling them "rightwingers".
It does say that they have used people undercover (and been caught doing so).

But I don't see where in the article it alleges that the footage provided in this case was altered, manipulated or otherwise changed to show something that did not occur.

If government officials are conducting themselves properly then they should have nothing to fear.

If the videographers are manipulating their videos then that would be open to scrutiny.

Right, federal judge rules Mass. law prohibiting secret audio recording of police, government officials is unconstitutional.

That sounds OK. But then creating fiction is questionable, as you write.

The problem with O'Keefe and Project Veritas is that their connection with truth, veritas is quite thin.
