The key parts:

Across all parties everyone opposes turning the clocks between summer and winter time.

The bill that started out as massive people's initiative was abandoned by Finnish Parliament on the note that Republic of Finland cannot decide whether the clock is turned or not, Finnish government lacks the mandate.

This is another issue that is dictated on Republic of Finland on EU level, from EU, by EU parliament overwhelmingly dominated by non-Finns, people Finns cannot vote for.

To get this bill across which was supported by all parties, Finland needed to change the entire EU-wide policy.

And after abandoning the bill this is what the Finnish politicians claimed they were going to pursue - an EU-wide change in order to get the change done in Finland.

I am so fucking proud of our "independent" country my family lost lives, blood and property defending. It is a fitting end for the 100th celebratory year, that a bill that is supported by each and everyone in the country cannot be passed because it's none of our business - it is the business of our real leaders in the Brussels and Berlin.

Finland was incorporated into the Russian Empire as the Grand Duchy of Finland in 1809. Declared itself independant after the 1917 Russian Revolution.

You can always move to the states, Kameo. Other Finns have made the move and lived to tell the tale.

What about before 1809 ?

I've probably read about this in conjunction with the "Great Northern War" but it was more than a few weeks ago ... :)

They were part of the kingdom of Sweden from the late 13th century on.

In turn all dropped into the murky box of fog where Swedish Kings and Novgorod Kings fought over access to the Baltic Sea starting in the 1100s. In which some of the Karelian Finns and Karelian Russians sided with Novgorod against other Karelian Finns and Swedes.

It's all a big box of adders really.

So that explains why "wulfir" pounds on his chest over Finland sometimes ...

No kings in Novgorod, it was a republic. You should know better.

So it goes.
