Maybe a Russki satellite with a RTG burned up on re-entry

There was a case in the Caucasus of some hunters finding an ABANDONED RTG, breaking it open and taking the Plutonium Oxide plugs and walking aroung with them in their backpacks for several days. I don' think the Russians ever quite mastered the industrial safety concepts.

Some things never change there! this is one of my fave stories of how much Russia DGAF.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sverdlovsk_anthrax_leak

Quote:
Large filters over the exhaust pipes were the only barriers between the anthrax dust and the outside environment. On the last Friday of March 1979 (30 March 1979), a technician removed a clogged filter while drying machines were temporarily turned off. He left a written notice, but his supervisor did not write this down in the logbook as he was supposed to do. The supervisor of the next shift did not find anything unusual in the logbook and turned the machines on.

Good safety procedures there, it was only the most powerful anthrax strain in the Soviet arsenal after all! And in the middle of a city, too.

Shocking lack of concern for safety....and then Boris Yeltsin covers it up as a local official.

There was also the incident where iirc. they were testing thermobaric munitions or whatever without proper warning signs around the firing range and a bunch of hikers wandered to the scene and were pulverized.

The Dyaltov Pass Incident
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyatlov_Pass_incident

Quote:
The experienced trekking group, who were all from the Ural Polytechnical Institute, had established a camp on the slopes of Kholat Syakhl when disaster struck. During the night, something caused them to tear their way out of their tents and to flee the campsite while inadequately dressed during a heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperature.

Soviet Union investigators determined that six victims died from hypothermia and that the three others showed signs of physical trauma. One victim had a fractured skull; another had brain damage but no sign of an injured skull. Additionally, the tongue and eyes of a team member were missing. The investigation concluded that an "unknown compelling force" had caused the deaths.

Officially they have offered stuff like, "maybe they just panicked" resulting in skull fractures, lost tongues and eyes? Obviously it's impossible that it could have been parachute mine tests happening in the region because Russians never make mistakes like that.

It's all capitalist counter-revolutionary propaganda and saboteurs. Not that there were chemical or biological weapons to be sabotaged in the middle of city but the leak was caused by saboteurs. There was no leak, return to your homes. No radiation here, the nucular reaktor is supposed to eksplode, collapse and burn violently. Bird droppings are causing stuff to glow, it's perfektly safe and normal. Back to factory you, nothing to see here.

I always loved their attitude to major catastrophies, especially ones they'd caused themselves - deny, deny and deny, tell people everything is fine, panic, destroy all evidence, keep insisting everything is fine, arrest people who are asking questions about the reactor building - a major part of the city's skyline - having been blown off. Then after a couple of weeks of stalling and after recovering from your hangover suddenly start evacuating people with 3 minute warning. Blame USA, keep denying.
