That could be all rhetorical. The prof might be playing devil's advocate.

If I were looking up at the night sky 10,000 years ago I don't think I would immediately deduce the Earth had a small atmosphere surrounded by the vacuum of space and we were spinning around the Sun at thousands of times faster than the fastest hawk.

It could probably be considered a valid argument among college professors that space doesn't exist because Trump believes it does.

I guess my point is context. The question of experience as reality vs others experience vs reality vs ok a reality independent of experience really exists is a very very old debate, and those are newbs in a college course. So he seems on the face of it to be, maybe, re-introducing Plato's old discourse about shadows on a wall.

As a cognitive exercise it is slightly amusing. Of course, only in the arts and humanities can this sort of thing be taken seriously... as though gravity doesn't exist because fat people experience it differently than thin people or whatever.

I had an undergrad prof that insisted that scientific notions of lift and thrust were no better than cargo cult rituals of summoning with respect to the flow of commercial goods in aircraft cargo holds because in the experienced reality of some Solomon Islanders the ritual was the thing that made the aircraft appear. My rebuttal was that I'd give their reality an equal place at the explanatory table if they cast a spell and a 727 magically pops into existence with a cargo hold full of C-rats and ice cream.

More information about that debate professor:
Update: I contacted Michael Moreno for more information about where this happened. He replied “This happened at Weber State University, Utah. The professor is Ryan Wash.” He also pointed out that he’d uploaded a new video offering some additional details:

*Ryan Wash, an openly gay debater from Kansas who won the 2013 Cross Examination Association and National Debate Tournament championships

This includes some highlight's of this professor's debate history.

I found a video for the 2013 National Debate Tournament championships (which includes Ryan Wash):

I only skipped through this video but.....

Both sides in this debate-------- :?

I mean WTF???

So is that what modern debate is now?

So now you do not have to be white in order to exhibit "Toxic Whiteness":

You Don’t Have To Be White To Exhibit Toxic Whiteness

There was a despicable attack perpetrated in New Jersey recently, where two boys, age 17, were arrested for urinating on a group of African-American schoolgirls and using racial epithets. You probably didn’t hear about it initially in the usual mainstream media outlets because the young men were described as being “of Indian descent.” (Doesn’t fit the media narrative.) Still, it was an awful incident.

But if you stayed tuned to the story for a bit longer, you did wind up hearing about it in an op-ed at the New York Times. Amazingly, while the incident was blamed on racism, the culprit was still identified as “whiteness.” (Free Beacon)

A New York Times op-ed Saturday made the case that a hate crime carried out by Indian-American teens on African-American girls proved that “whiteness evolves” and includes people of color.

Police in Lawrence Township, N.J., arrested two 17-year-olds and charged them with several counts of harassment and bias intimidation after the pair allegedly urinated on a group of girls at a high school football game and called them the n-word. In a tweet, the police announced that both perpetrators were of “Indian descent.”

In response, Princeton University professor emeritus of history Nell Irvin Painter penned a Times op-ed headlined, “A Racist Attack Shows How Whiteness Evolves.”

Yes, you read that correctly. This incident is an example of “how whiteness evolves.”

The op-ed is still available online and you can read it here. The author is a woman by the name of Nell Irvin Painter and she’s the author of a book called “The History of White People.” Or at least I hope she’s a woman. I’ll confess I didn’t check her pronouns first. And that distinction will become important in a moment because Ms. (Mx.?) Painter manages to draw a line between the behavior of these Indian-American youths and white people by claiming that race – much like “gender” according to the social justice warriors – is a “construct.” (Emphasis added)

While it’s tempting to see the reported ethnicity of the boys suspected in the assault as complicating the story and raising questions about whether the assault should be thought of as racist, I look at it through a different lens. Instead of asking what the boys’ reported racial identity tells us about the nature of the attack, we should see the boys as enacting American whiteness through anti-black assault in a very traditional way. In doing so, the assailants are demonstrating how race is a social construct that people make through their actions. They show race in the making, and show how race is something we perform, not just something we are in our blood or in the color of our skin.

See how easy that was? If non-white people engage in racist behavior, it’s easily explained. You see, they may not be “biologically white” by birth, but they are still white because they are acting like white people. It’s a genius concept!

You will notice, however, that this feat of verbal legerdemain only applies to white people. No white person doing anything out of the ordinary is ever “exhibiting blackness” or Hispanicness or Asianness. (My spell checker is having a fit with this paragraph so we should probably move on.)

Whiteness is amazing, isn’t it? It can be credited with virtually anything the imagination can conjure up. In case you missed John’s column on the subject yesterday, whiteness is also the reason we can assume that outer space, the planets, and the stars are all imaginary. You see, since only white people ever get to travel into space, other people have no reason to believe that such things exist because they’ve never seen them. (Spoiler alert: there have been quite a few black astronauts.)

That theory was put forward by a professor at Weber State University in Utah. And he doesn’t seem to be speaking facetiously. Whiteness can eliminate pretty much all of the known universe except for the parts of Earth that you’ve personally been to. Oh, and possibly the moon because everyone can see that.

So gender is a construct and now race is too. Exit question for Ms. Painter in case she happens to read this. Does this theory mean that everyone owes Rachel Dolezal an apology?

Baltimore Will Have Bought-a-Less: The City’s Museum of Art Announces it Won’t Buy Any Works if They’re Made by Men

Posted at 3:47 pm on November 30, 2019 by Alex Parker

If you’ve been wanting to appreciate art lately but’ve been deterred by the genitals of people creating it, take heart: In order to fight the patriarchy, the Baltimore Museum of Art has made a promise — in 2020, they will refuse to purchase any composition if it was made by a guy.

That’s right: If you’re a male artist, your masterpiece won’t be welcome.

Director Christopher Bedford told the Baltimore Sun this is how it’s done, son:

“This is how you raise awareness and shift the identity of an institution. You don’t just purchase one painting by a female artist of color and hang it on the wall next to a painting by Mark Rothko. To rectify centuries of imbalance, you have to do something radical.”

If you’re wondering who the late Mark Rothko is, he’s this dude:

Mark won’t be getting a boost in Baltimore any time soon. Not — as noted by NPR — unless it’s free:

The policy will apply only to works purchased by the museum, not gifts.

BMA is really going all out this year to bring balance to the Force:

The move is part of a larger initiative launched in October called 2020 Vision, a series of 22 exhibits at the museum celebrating [women] artists. The initiative includes 13 solo exhibitions and seven thematic shows, with more being planned. Next year marks a century since women were guaranteed the right to vote in the United States, with the ratification of the 19th Amendment.

As it stands, the museum boasts 95,000 works. However, only 3,800 — just 4% — come compliments of female artists.

And nationwide, it’s even worse. Not only with regard to sex, but race:

A 2019 study of 18 major U.S. art museums found that 87% of artists in their collections are men, and 85% of the artists are white. Another study earlier this year found that up to 10% of art galleries don’t have a single woman among the artists they represent.

BMA Chief Curator Asma Naeem explained the sexist oppression is outright built-in:

“The challenges are systemic and widespread, because many of the works in local donors, local patrons’ collections are traditionally made by male artists. There are these various subtle but consistent, pervasive markers of what is considered creative achievement, and we are trying to reset all of those markers.”

Back to my first paragraph, artist Elissa Blount Moorehead — who’s set to be featured this year — believes the museum’s commitment will be great for the art world at large. That’s because, in her view, one reason people have stopped going to museums is because they’re sick of men:

“I’m hoping that all of us can start to think about how patriarchy and hierarchy has really diminished people’s interest in museums and cultural centers. This will enliven your audience. It’s just the right thing to do.”

So there ya go. But wait — I’ve saved a glimmer of hope for the end. If you’re a male artist and would like to have your work purchased by the Baltimore Museum of Art, it sounds as if they may cough up some dough if you announce you’ve become a girl.

I used brackets in the quote above, but here it is with its original text:

The move is part of a larger initiative launched in October called 2020 Vision, a series of 22 exhibits at the museum celebrating female-identifying artists.

You’ll have to weigh the pros and cons, but good luck, chick.

-ALEX
So if you are male and want your artwork to be featured at the Baltimore Museum of Art, you will either need to find someone to purchase, then donate it to the museum, or you will need to start identifying a a girl.

Didn't post this in the Star Wars thread at the Moving Pictures forum (since that area is not intended to be political).

Another Hollyweird person weighing in on Trump (she's apparently not even a US citizen) when she has a major movie being released in 2 weeks.

Disney is probably cringing at the timing of it.
