"cutting off" is a completely offensive move. Using force to prevent someone from walking down the sidewalk or driving down the highway is 100% offensive and warrants response in kind.
 But whose going to respond, is Japan going to attack mainland China, does Japan have capabilities to open the South China Seas?

Asia can respond if they want to !

If one of my neighbors tried to block the road. The other near by neighbors can get together and go unblock the road.

China's "navy" is far from proven or invincible in terms of violent conflict.

SK + Japan + PI + taiwan + VN +Malaya + Indonesia ... could give the chinks something to think about out there in the water ... the Vietnamese would take the largest risk, since they share a land border.

All they have to do is start sinking the chink merchant ships ... then the chink economy goes bellie up. I think those nations could blockade the chinks easier than the chinks could blockade them.

I think the chinks are smart enough not to kick themselves in the teeth by trying it. Threatening it maybe. But doing it could be a big disaster for the chinks.

I did a rough estimate ... compared surface combatant counts from "patrol craft" on up ... and submarines ... and people ...

Vietnam + Singapore + Malaya + indonesia + philippines + taiwan + s. korea + Japan ... roughly equals chinks in terms of numbers ... at sea.

I was depressed with that lack of size of the PI Navy. Considering they are a HUGE archipelago ... where is their navy !!?? Embarrassed for them ... what are they counting on !!??

And again, as long as the anti-chink coalition retains the abiility to sink the chink merchant boats as they steam by, the anti-chinks have plenty of leverage. Which ever way the chinks sail, they have to sail past the waters of these nations ... most of those nations can sail elsewhere without sailing past the chinks ... so it still looks like the chinks would be in trouble if they try to deny the asian waters to the asians and the asians fight back.

Trump does not advocate downsizing... he advocates modernization.

The Navy, for example, with the odd exception, is still using the ships they had when I was in the Navy 26 years ago. They still depend on the F/A (laughs out loud) 18 Strike Fighters of which only one third are operational.

The Air Force needs 2,000 pilots 'cause their people are consistently deployed throughout the world.

And our nuclear deterrent still flies an aircraft designed in 1948 for Christ's sake.

Well that is simultaneously disturbing (to hear there is so much anitquation) and encouraging (to hear Trump is pro-modernization).

Is the B-52 still part of our nuclear deterrent force?

I thought that they'd all been relegated to anti-ship rotary cruise missile disgorgers.

The USAF is working on a post B-2 stealth bomber and of course the current B-2 and B-1B are nuclear capable (and more likely to survive anywhere than the B-52).

Are ICBMs and air-launched nukes even necessary these days? SLBMs are pretty much enough as a deterrent aren't they?

I know there is that whole "triad" model from the 1970s, but my recollection of the total SLBM counts for U.S. are that they are substantial, and probably sufficient to act as a deterrent. Better than either air or land based from the standpoint that they cannot be preemptively interdicted, and are quite likely to be viable targets in any followup interdiction too. Any airbase that can run nuclear capable aircraft or non-mobile ICBM silos are likely to be the first on any nuclear aggressor's list, whether that be first strike or retaliatory. SLBMs are much harder for them to even know about fully much less target.

Yes. Every blue water vessel in that hemisphere will be at the bottom of the ocean about 48 hours after that conflict starts. The US would likely win the engagement, but will be the size of the Haitian navy from that point forward. The winner of that war will be the one that preserves the most satellites.
