Easy come, easy go...

Quote:
North Korea has cancelled Wednesday's high-level talks with South Korea because of anger over its joint military exercises with the US.

The North's official KCNA news agency said the exercises were a "provocation" and a rehearsal for an invasion.

It also warned the US over the fate of the historic summit between Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump that is scheduled for 12 June.

In March, Mr Trump stunned the world by accepting an invitation to meet Mr Kim.

"We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!" the US leader tweeted at the time.

The US State Department said it was continuing to prepare for the Trump-Kim summit in Singapore and that it was not aware of any changes in the North Korean position.

Some 100 warplanes, including an unspecified number of B-52 bombers and F-15K jets, began the Max Thunder drills on Friday.

The US and South Korea have always insisted such drills are purely for defence purposes, and based out of a mutual defence agreement they signed in 1953.

They also say the exercises are necessary to strengthen their readiness in case of an external attack.

The talks with South Korea that had been scheduled for Wednesday were agreed earlier this week.

They were to take place at Panmunjom, a military compound in the demilitarised zone between the two countries.

Representatives from both countries had planned to discuss follow-up measures on agreements they had made at a rare summit on 27 April.

The North's Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in of South Korea agreed to work to rid the peninsula of nuclear weapons following the talks.

They also agreed to push towards turning the armistice that ended the Korean War in 1953 into a peace treaty this year.

Other points the leaders agreed in a joint statement were:

An end to "hostile activities" between the two nations
Changing the demilitarised zone (DMZ) that divides the country into a "peace zone" by ceasing propaganda broadcasts
An arms reduction in the region pending the easing of military tension
To push for four-way talks involving the US and China
Organising a reunion of families left divided by the war
Connecting and modernising railways and roads across the border
Further joint participation in sporting events, including this year's Asian Games

Trump is a negotiator, made his fortune that way, I expect he saw this coming.

Classic PRK...throw in a new demand right at the end.

I hope we don't cave. Hold the exercises and tell the Norks we can talk about FUTURE exercises at the summit meeting. If they say no...well then..thanks for the hostages..now go fuck yourselves.

;)

They'll be back. Just playing the negotiation game.

I expect the Trump Admin, unlike previous ones, to attain a decent agreement with the Norks or walk away if their offers stink.

Trump cancels the summit with Kim Dong...

Quote:
US President Donald Trump has cancelled a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

He said he had made the decision based on the "tremendous anger and open hostility" in a recent North Korean statement.

Mr Trump said it would be "inappropriate" to hold the summit as scheduled in Singapore on 12 June.

In a letter to Mr Kim, he said he was very much looking forward to meeting him "some day".

"I was very much looking forward to being there with you. Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have the long-planned meeting," Mr Trump said.

"You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used," he added.

Earlier on Thursday, North Korean official Choe Son-hui dismissed remarks by US Vice-President Mike Pence - who had said North Korea "may end like Libya" - as "stupid".

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was killed by rebels in 2011 after renouncing nuclear weapons eight years earlier.

Mr Choe, who has been involved in several diplomatic interactions with the US over the past decade, said the North would not "beg" for dialogue and warned of a "nuclear showdown" if diplomacy failed.

"Thanks for the hostages chump, see you."

The only meaningful "agreement" with Kim Jong Un would be: him either dead, or behind bars in allied custody; his military defeated, surrendered and disarmed and Southern/U.S. forces in occupation of North Korea; and a provisional occupation governing authority beginning the slow, difficult task of reforming, rebuilding and restoring civilization to North Korean soil, most likely through political reunification with the south.

Anything less is just kicking the can down the road to the next decade, a repetition on a pattern which extends back into the 1950s; each time this cycle repeats the risks for everyone in the region worsen.

I find the timing of this amusing as hell.

North Korea appeared to destroy at least three nuclear tunnels, observation buildings, a metal foundry and living quarters at its Punggye-ri nuclear test site on Thursday, in a process observed by invited international journalists.

Then seemingly a few hours later Trump calls off the upcoming meeting.

Biggest troll in 2018 (to date) IMHO.

[The timing may not have been intentional, but still funny as hell]
