Damn, they got 3100m peaks in Korea. Did not know that. I knew it was mountainous but always thought it was more like Appalachia type "mountains" not truly alpine, above tree line type stuff.

ROK recently (2011-12) started producing their own sniper rifle to support their new idea of expanding the sniper role into regular army units. This is a fantastic 7.62x51 sniper rifle ... but begs the question, why not jump up to .300WM ?? The US Army made the switch from 7.62x51 to .300WM at almost the same time the ROK were first going to 7.62x51 ... hum ...

7.62x51 even with the best 175gr SMK loads still goes trans-sonic in the 700 meter area ... whereas around 900 meters for 220 SMK ... so ROK is a generation behind .. but they might have one of the most effective 7.62x51 rifles on earth ... at least they have that ... now do they have the training program to support it? Time will tell!

Could you please translate that into Engrish?

This is called "exterior ballistics" ... when a long range bullet exists the barrel of the rifle that is firing it ... it may be traveling some where between about 2600 fps or on up to 3200 fps or higher. Not being powered, the air resistance and gravity operate on the bullet and pull it to the ground and slow it down. If the bullet flies far enough, it will slow down to the point where it is approaching the sound barrier. The sound barrier around me is about 1120 fps ... at about 1340 fps I call that the "transonic" zone ... though the speeds with vary at different altitudes, humidity, temperature, etc. As bullets pass through the transonic zone, from above, they experience instability. Once the bullet exits the transonic zone it is below the sound barrier and it is sub-sonic. But due to the instability in the ts zone it might be pointed in a slightly different direction than it was when it entered the zone, hence the shooter experiences "wild" results, scattered up , down, left or right. Some bullets, like the SMK (Sierra Match King) 175gr (used by US Army snipers shooting 7.62 ammo) have specially designed boat tails on the rear ends of the bullets to help maintain more stability passing through the TS zone. But net/net ... prior to reaching the transsonic zone, a good rifle and shooter will be able to maintain sub-moa (less than 1.047 inches per 100 yds) variation between POI and POA (Point of Impact and Point of Aim). After passing through the transonic zone, the performance will deviate more and more, 2 MOA, 3 MOA, etc. the farther it flies, on average.
So, you do not want to pass through the TS zone, if you don't have to. Thats why for my .22LR rifle I shoot subsonic ammo, even out to 300yds or beyond. Because I start subsonic and stay subsonic. But if you want to push a 220gr (grain, the weight of the bullet) SMK out to 1200yds (the US Army nominal max effective range for the .300WM) then you must pass through the TS Zone. However, the farther out the TS zone is the more targets you can engage before you hit the TS zone. That's why you want to push the TS zone out as far as you can. Of course a heavier bullet requires a heavier barrel to withstand the heavier pressures, but life is full of trade-offs. So 700yds and below, the 7.62 (.308WIN) ammo is above TS and is fine. But out to 900yds, the .300WM will beat the 7.62 ... of course out to 1375yds (for my .338LM rifle) the 300SMK I shoot (at 2700 fps MV - muzzle velocity) remains above the TS zone, so I hit the TS zone at 1375. But heavier rifle. My .338LM is about 20 pounds loaded up for the field. The .300WM is about 16 and a 7.62 bolt gun is maybe 12 pounds.

Are those the parts that needed translating !!??
:)

As long as you are shooting pistols at short distances (under 50yds) then you don't need to know about any of that stuff ... if you want to shoot rifles out to 1000yds or so, then knowing some of exterior ballistics helps.
