YouTube's New Moderators Mistakenly Pull Right-Wing Channels

By

February 28, 2018, 3:12 PM EST Updated on February 28, 2018, 4:53 PM EST

Video site’s human screening stumbles in a major early test
Episode shows challenge of spotting and removing content

YouTube’s new moderators, brought in to spot fake, misleading and extreme videos, stumbled in one of their first major tests, mistakenly removing some clips and channels in the midst of a nationwide debate on gun control.

The Google division said in December it would assign more than 10,000 people to moderate content after a year of scandals over fake and inappropriate content on the world’s largest video site.

In the wake of the Feb. 14 school shooting in Parkland, Florida, some YouTube moderators mistakenly removed several videos and some channels from right-wing, pro-gun video producers and outlets.

Some YouTube channels recently complained about their accounts being pulled entirely. On Wednesday, the Outline highlighted accounts, including Titus Frost, that were banned from the video site. Frost tweeted on Wednesday that a survivor of the shooting, David Hogg, is an actor. Jerome Corsi of right-wing conspiracy website Infowars said on Tuesday that YouTube had taken down one of his videos and disabled his live stream.

Shutting entire channels would have marked a sweeping policy change for YouTube, which typically only removes channels in extreme circumstances and focuses most disciplinary action on specific videos. But YouTube said some content was taken down by mistake. The site didn’t address specific cases and it’s unclear if it meant to take action on the accounts of Frost and Corsi.

"As we work to hire rapidly and ramp up our policy enforcement teams throughout 2018, newer members may misapply some of our policies resulting in mistaken removals," a YouTube spokeswoman wrote in an email. "We’re continuing to enforce our existing policies regarding harmful and dangerous content, they have not changed. We’ll reinstate any videos that were removed in error."

The misstep pulls YouTube, Google and parent Alphabet Inc. deeper into a toxic political fights over gun control, fake and extreme content, and whether internet companies should be responsible for what third parties post on their services. The episode also shows how the huge video site continues to struggle with policing the service and how difficult it is to spot troubling content and decide whether the material should be taken down.

Gun reform calls since the shooting have sparked a rash of conspiracy theories on the web about the student activists. YouTube was criticized last week after promoting a video with a title that suggested Hogg, the teen survivor of the Florida school shooting, was a paid actor. The clip contained footage from an authoritative news source, leading YouTube’s software-based screening system to misclassify it. After YouTube was alerted to the video, it was pulled.

In the wake of the Florida shooting, Google and other internet companies are facing external pressure to remove the National Rifle Association’s NRA TV channel from their video streaming services. To date, YouTube and other services haven’t pulled the NRA’s official channel.

YouTube’s official policy says that "harmful or dangerous" and "hateful" content can violate its guidelines. If video creators break the rules three times within three months, YouTube terminates the account.

Alex Jones, who runs Infowars and has pushed conspiracy theories about school shootings, is the most outspoken self-proclaimed victim of YouTube. He said this week that YouTube told him his account faces two strikes. On Tuesday, an Infowars article stated that Google was "purging conservative media," claiming that "CNN and other news outlets" were lobbying Google to terminate the Infowars channel.

Sargon has had his google account suspended...

Quote:
Google Suspended Popular Anti-Social Justice YouTuber Sargon of Akkad Despite Zero Strikes on His Account

If you’ve never heard of YouTube’s Carl Benjamin, more commonly known as Sargon of Akkad, then the short version is that he’s one of the leading voices of the anti-social justice crowd. His channel is packed to the brim with commentary videos that are either debunking false claims, putting reason up against unreasonable people, or just shining a light on some of the more ridiculous aspects of the hard left. You might not agree with all of Benjamin’s stances, or his methods, but one thing for sure is that he’s no friend to the progressive left. His criticisms are harsh, but typically very fair.

And without warning, Google has completely suspended his account.

What was his crime? Well…we’re not sure yet, but being guilty of wrong-think might be the answer.

Google has made it an openly apparent that the corporation is not friendly to right leaning thought. It fired James Damore for writing a memoir that pointed out the company’s lack of ideological diversity due to leftist bias, and that the lack of women in tech is due more to biological leanings than patriarchy. It suspended the YouTube account of famed clinical psychologist, University of Toronto’s Dr. Jordan B. Peterson in the middle of his biblical lecture series for no discernible reason other than that he “violated terms of service.”

YouTube interviewer Dave Rubin conducted an experiment, one where he insulted capitalism in the video’s title, and one where he insulted socialism. The capitalism video was left alone by the YouTube flagging community. The socialism video was demonetized almost immediately.

Then it was discovered that the hard leftist Southern Poverty Law Center was policing YouTube for improper content. The SPLC is popular for throwing around the term “hate group,” and labeling people “alt-right” or “extremist” at the drop of a hat.

Benjamin commonly defended Donald Trump from the get go, and called out the left’s consistent derangement surrounding Trump and his election to office. This oftentimes put him at odds with social justice groups, whom he castigates regularly, but who seem to have a mighty hold on Google and YouTube.

Benjamin’s suspension wasn’t an “if,” it was a “when.”

So this is just a drop in the bucket to Google’s increasingly open leftism, and ideological bigotry toward those who don’t share their outlooks. What’s more is that this is overtly frightening. Google is one of the main distributors of information, be it search results or email.

What Google has done, not just with Benjamin’s suspension but with it’s continued acts of unfair bias actions, is that even if you do follow the rules, you can be suspended or deleted at the drop of a hat if your message is somehow displeasing to any of the flaggers. With all of those flaggers being as left leaning as the SPLC, anyone is subject to elimination.

I wish this were hyperbole, but the pattern seems to fit.

Even if you don’t agree 100 percent with Benjamin, this should both outrage and scare you. If Google gets comfortable silencing those it disagrees with, there’s no telling where the censorship will stop. And with almost everyone using Google’s platform for information distribution in some way, this could have massively damaging effects.

This isn't the first time these "accidents" have happened there.

Of course, they stated last year that they were appointing censors from the likes of the far-left SPLC and others, such as Buzzfeed News contributors, to decide what will be allowed on YT.

Was quite obvious, judging by their appointment implications, that they would be accosting anyone with different political views.

The creators can either get used to being regularly shut out, or completely move elsewhere.

Although I think there's a clear case for a class action lawsuit if all the limited-state blacklisting and regular banning "accidents" keep happening. On grounds of discriminatory practices.

I imagine that a lot of people really, REALLY do not like Sargon, so that is no surprise. Hopefully he will get reactivated.

Anything critical of the Left will be blocked. It's no accident either. The excuse of some Russian mischief-making is all that was needed,

It's the hyenas babysitting the lion cubs. They can't help themselves.

When you have a template of how the world should be, someone who advocates for small government is engaging in "Fake News" even if they are simply making observations or commenting.

Yeah, I don't watch it either. Some tin-hat shit on there. Might be good for some comedy from Alex Jones, I suppose, if you're looking for a laugh.

For example, his live trolling of TYT's Cenk awhile back was pretty funny.

As for YouTube, their newly inducted thousands of censors were obviously just another step in a company-wide crackdown. Not only has the parent company, Google, been firing employees with different political viewpoints, but they continue to implement waves of blacklistings and deletions for larger YouTube contributors who criticize their cult.

Axing the nuttier ones are just low-hanging fruit, in preparation for doing the same to the moderates later on. They already "accidentally" locked Sargon out for days before reinstatement, but it's not the first time that's happened to him on social media. They keep trying, but the outcry spreads pretty quickly and they keep having to walk it back. Probably because they're afraid of lawsuits that will have traction based on discriminatory accusations.
