Soda tax passes, Philadelphia becomes first big city in nation to enact one

Updated: JUNE 16, 2016 — 5:56 PM EDT

Looking to raise millions for a bold expansion of early childhood education, Philadelphia City Council on Thursday approved a 1.5-cent-per-ounce tax on sugar-sweetened and diet beverages, the first such tax imposed in a major U.S. city.

City Council officially passes a 1.5 cent-per-ounce tax on sugar-sweetened and diet beverages, making Philadelphia the first big city in the nation to do so Thursday, June 16, 2016.

The 13-4 vote put to bed months of speculation and at-times bitter negotiations, but also ensured the national spotlight will stay turned to Philadelphia for months, if not years, to come.

Critics quickly vowed a court challenge. And as the city rolls out the unprecedented levy - and its economic and public health impacts come into view - experts, advocates and legislators will surely be watching closely.

Mayor Kenney, who can count this the first major political win of his term, called it a start to "changing the narrative of poverty in our city."

Continued at above link

I predict that the decline in the consumption of sugar-sweetened and diet beverages in Philadelphia will be minimal as people will simply purchase their beverages outside the city.

As for their predicted amount of tax revenue raised, I will predict that it will fall short of projections. They will fund a lot of new projects in anticipation of the tax revenue and when the revenue comes up short, they will raise taxes elsewhere to make up for it.

And that is another reason I refuse to even visit northern states/cities run by Liberals. But they need to tax the shit out of those greasy nasty things. I can't stand them. How about a 10 cent per ounce tax on beer and a 20 cent per ounce tax on wine and hard spirits? Use the money to combat drunk driving and pay to actually lock up drunk drivers for a few years instead of probation until they wipe out a family.

And I think that tax is extremely low since they tax cig's a hell of lot harder. Cig's is about 25-30 cents or more per cig.

That would include water. Why not tax air? Never mind, the climate cultists are on it.

Was just thinking someone needs to dump a bunch of soda into the river & make a statement.

There's probably a tax on that, however.

The EPA would not be happy with that.
You would be fined for dumping without a permit. ;)

The issues in Flint and Philidelphia have nothing in common other than that they involves liquids (water and sugary drinks).

PS
The fuckup in Flint is due to government incompetence on several levels.
