Germany awarded him the Iron Cross, 2 class.

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
The Iron Cross was awarded for bravery in battle as well as other military contributions in a battlefield environment.

He must have done something to earn that medal.

Indeed Törni did a lot. He got his iron cross 1943-12-11. He fought in Finnish army at that time, had not fought a single day in German ranks. Törni was not with Wiking.

Germans decorated many Finnish soldiers, even one Jewish medical major was given iron cross. But he didn't accept, for obvious reasons.

Anything else?

He may (or may not) have fought in the German ranks (I have not seen anything definitive one way or the other).
I have read several internet articles about him and watched some You Tube vids but have not read any books about him (as Wilkerson has, and you may have as well).

It does however appear that he did serve at some point in the German SS (based on the the photo of him dressed in a German SS uniform in my initial post).

A lot of krauts worked for the nazis ... in theory all party members did ... and amongst those a lot worked for the SS ... for instance ... Wernher von Braun ... who was a Major in the SS ...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wernher_von_Braun

And without whom our space program would've most like been delayed ... at least a week or two ...

==
Thorne was in prison for a while after the war ... but he did his job in the US Army ... and paid the price ...

My bold emphasis above.

I am aware of that.

There were many ethnic Germans who were not even German citizens, had never lived a day in their life in Germany, who served in the German military, including the SS (either voluntarily or they were compelled to). Some of my relatives (ethnic Germans who were born and lived in Romania) were forced to serve in the Waffen SS. I do not hold that against them. It was either serve or risk severe punishment, up to and including a firing squad.

The studio photo is during the training period perhaps in Vienna. The rank of ustuf is the same had in Finnish Army; vänrikki.

But is true that Törni did see some action during the few last weeks as SS-Hauptsturmführer. That also corresponds his rank in the Finnish Army: captain.

Then I found some interesting factoids about Törni's stint in Germany. If you are interested I may help you... ;)

About the photo in your post starting this thread:

Image
"Kolme huimapäätä ja kovien taistelujen karaisemaa upseeria neuvottelussa ennen vastaiskua. Kuvassa vasemmalla kapteeni Railio JR 33, keskellä Mannerheim-ristin ritari luutnantti Törni Jääkärikomppanian päällikkö ja oikealla edellisen ""adjutantti"" luutnantti Holger Pitkänen. Tolvajärven pohjoispuoli 1944.07.27"
Three battle hardened daredevil officers before a counterattack. To left Captain Railio JR 33, in the middle Mannerheim Cross Knight Lieutenant Lauri Törni, and to the right his platoon leader Lieutenant Holger Pitkänen. To the North of Tolvajärvi 1944.07.27

I have some books, in Finnish, I can read the original texts. How about you? ;)

But then, if you are sincerely interested...

Sure, I’d be interested in hearing what you have about Thorne.

He may have made the mistake of being born a Finn, but he ended as an American hero.
;-)
