Post subject:  Pea Ridge Sandbox AAR

I fought a sandbox event on the Pea Ridge OOB and battle map with AI cranked up to get every advantage. Used "bare" map so only the all seeing eye is visible, limited camera elevation and couriers (lost a lot of those in this battle). Interesting battle due to terrain and the army organizations, not to mention the presence of large numbers (in relation to the size of the armies) cavalry units mingled in with the division infantry. I probably just beat a draw result, but it was close throughout.

The map below highlights major movements. The union army under Samuel Curtis started the map in heavy wooded and hilly area. I decided to detach 2 cavalry brigades to move each direction on the Bentonville Road to keep an eye on the flanks and scout, while the infantry divisions were ordered to advance southeast to the high ground, all heavy woods. I took Curtis on the usual leader scouting mission towards Elkhorn Tavern, then Southwest to the roads running across our advance. With no sign of the rebs, I ordered 3 divisions (from left to right Carr, Sigel and Asboth to advance to the edge of Ford Road which provided good elevation and woods. The fourth (Davis) had just been ordered to probe towards Elkhorn Tavern, when I found the rebs.

Van Dorn's whole army was marching in column up an unnamed path through heavy wooded area towards the Ford house. They were unaware of the union army presence until they approached the fields around the Ford House. Union artillery opened on them and they turned to deploy across the open fields. As they engaged Sigel and Asboth with heavy numbers, Carr was ordered to advance to an elevated position and then strike the rear columns as they were moving past. Davis was ordered to swing southwest and hit what at that point was the right flank of the reb line. To make a long story short, the fight then aligned along the unnamed road and the open areas around the Ford house. As a reference, the pictures of the cavalry action take place almost exactly where the all seeing eye is located on the map. I would highly recommend sandboxing this battle.

Pictures and descriptions:

1. Rebs deploy from columns near Ford house on left, launch heavy attacks on 2 middle yank divisions
2. Reb artillery posted around Ford house to support initial attacks, later to support vs Davis flank attack that came from the woods in the background.
3. Yanks begin to break in the middle just as Davis flank attack and Carr's advance on the rear columns begin.

Pictures and descriptions:

1. Most of the close in fighting was along and near the unnamed path through heavy woods.
2. Large reb cavalry units showed up late in the battle; this shows yank regiment preparing for the initial charge.
3. A yank regiment overrun by cavalry charge; fortunately had reserves placed close behind that were able to fight off a total of 5 full on charges.

Pictures and descriptions:

1. As the battle expanded, the heaviest and closest fighting moved into the woods along the unnamed path on which the reb columns approached.
2. Heavy columns of reb cavalry advanced and deployed along the path later in the battle. This is a view of a yank regiment preparing to receive the initial charge.
3. A yank regiment overrun during the multiple charges. Fortunately reserves were positioned to fight off any further advance.

Apologies for that third post, tech issues, did not realize the original had posted until later. The last post is the correct version. Again, SOW fans should definitely sandbox Pea Ridge. Nice sized battle on challenging terrain.
