Teachers wearing body cameras to film unruly pupils

The Times

Teachers in schools are using police-style body cameras to record misbehaving pupils.

The cameras are used in at least two comprehensive schools in England, one of which has a history of pupils with behavioural problems, and have been approved by local education authorities, The Times understands.

Teachers turn on the cameras during incidents in the classroom to tackle “constant low-level disruption”, the cameras’ manufacturer said. They give verbal notice before starting to record, according to Tom Ellis, a lecturer at Portsmouth University.

The cameras film continuously, but encrypted footage is only saved once the teacher hits the record button, at which point pupils can see the live footage on an outward-facing screen.

The Information Commissioner’s Office, which regulates privacy issues, said that schools were free…

Unfortunately, the rest of the article is behind The Times paywall.

I will have to speculate on issues in the rest of the article.
---Does allowing teachers to have these body cams lead to a safer classroom? Help the safety of teachers?
---Does wearing them violate privacy rights of students?

Teachers seem fairly wise after all, they know that they will be on the receiving end before the saintly pupils most likely!

Imagining a not-too-distant Orwellian future in which ALL citizens MUST wear a bod cam (perhaps it is embedded into the retina?). Using massive computer networks, including pattern-recognizing video analysis software, the state monitors all citizens behaviors to insure that ONLY proper behaviors are manifest in the citizenry.

A citizen in a hinterland county tries to hack his data feed, and splice in files from previously recorded days, to maintain the appearance of normal day-to-day behavior while he goes "Off Cam" to engage in Obama Knows what sort of nefarious activity (by this time in the future, Obama will have been recognized as the new Messiah of Ifntopia, the post-revolutionary successor to the United States of America . . .)

Joe Yankton, unplugs his retina link as his revolutionary comrades splice in the data feed with the copies. This is the standard procedure for induction of new recruits into the "Off Cam Liberation Front" (OCLA) a 50,000 strong clandestine insurgency movement comprising citizens who are no longer under state surveillance. Joe and his new comrades know that he is now a deadman; anyone who goes Off Cam who is apprehended is never heard from again, and it is suspect that they are "reeducated" in super secret "sensitivity and engagement" camps where harsh interrogation and indoctrination techniques, such as listening to the full archive of Nancy Pelosi speeches while under the influence of mind-altering drugs are used to break down and then rebuild those who have broken from their "legal authorities."

The task now, is for Joe and his friends to scramble his GPS signal while they get as far away from his last accurate known location as quickly as possible, at which point the GPS signal too will be shut off. They jump into their awaiting hover cars and speed into the night . . .

-=-=-SCENE OVERLAP-=-=- footage of Joe and the OCLA speeding stealthily into the night and a pane engages of a technician in a far away data center puzzling over the readouts on her screen.

Regional Operator: This is regional operator RQC 1490. We have a possible, 10-36F in zip code 67479. Data feed from citizen PLB-002.1.84 has temporarily descynchronized. This looks like a splice in Eurtopia; recommend immediate deployment of Cam Lock Reclamation task force to suspects GPS coords. Over.

Local Dispatch: This is Eurtopia, Kansania dispatch. Affirmative RQC 1490. We are dispatching technicians to the GPS coordinates of PLB-002.1.84. Citizen will be brought into custody and their internal files examined for unauthorized access.

Cyberpunk is definitely our future.

Hell, it's pretty much our present. ;)
