Sad, but true, they have to pay. But how much?

There's nothing in Article 50 about doing that, so legally, no, we don't.

And we shouldn't pay anything without something in exchange, which the EU seems to have a problem in understanding. The way things are going at the moment the EU is going to get zip, because the EU refuses to offer anything.

Theresa May simply cannot hand over 40 billion that she doesn't have to without getting something back, if she did she'd be thrown out of office instantly by Brexiteer Tory MPs, and someone more hardline will take over. Even the EU is slowly waking up to this reality.

May may go. And it is more than 40.

Just have another referendum 2019. ;)

Why's that? Finally woken up to the reality of the EU without Britain paying for it all?

The EU itself hasn't even put a number on it, and the crusty lawyers in the House of Lords have opined we owe nothing legally - because there's nothing in Article 50 that says we owe a bean. As Barnier likes to talk about moral obligations rather than legal ones I assume he agrees.

And 40 billion will blow up Theresa May, plenty of Tory backbenchers have already said as much, so it's not going to happen without some concessions from the EU. As the EU is incapable of making concessions, I fully expect no deal, and good riddance.

I'm sure Finland will step into the funding gap. Going to be a whole new world in the EU without us mugs paying for it all.

Hey look at that, Finland contributes. A little. Greece is hungry, get working Nero.

What drew my attention was that Luxembourg contributed more than Finland does.
Finland has about 5.5 million people, while Luxembourg has about 540,000.
So is that right, Finland contributed less but has 10 times more people?

It's the net figure - all nations pay, but they get money back in subsidies.

Agricultural subs are huge - I doubt Luxembourg, a city state, gets much there! But maybe Finland does.

It looks to me (looking at the chart) that the total of the negative nets is considerably greater than the total of the positive nets ... who makes up the difference?

ooosah? howard? The KSA? :)

The EU has no deficit, and no 'national debt'. I assume the member states have to make up shortfalls!
