Quote:
"Let us be clear about three facts: First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm."

As true today as it was when written, in 1945.

And by the same token, all wars are ultimately lost by infantry, or the failure to use them effectively.

Hum, I'd say lost wars are lost by polly tishuns who place infantry in an unwinnable situation :)

Fair enough, that is another way to say what I was saying I think. Although, SOMETIMES it isn't the politicians who put them into an "unwinnable situation" entirely, but larger social or historical factors. It is for example, hard to blame strictly the Confederate politicians for the ACW. That was seems to have been an inevitable result of the schism between northern abolitionist and southern slaver cultures, and any southerner who we could imagine in the roles of the politicians who actually made the decisions to spark off the war would likely have behave much the same.

The war which the Muhammadans find themselves constantly embroiled in is probably also a good example of that. It isn't so much specific politicians or their foibles which keep getting them into wars, but rather their ideology.

I agree with CS, in fact wasn't that what we did in 1945, they were going to fight to our last man, we nuke 'em, they surrendered, we occupied.

How powerful is 'flower power', Tienanmen square:
Quote:
https://www.history.com/this-day-in-his ... akes-place In May 1989, nearly a million Chinese, mostly young students, crowded into central Beijing to protest for greater democracy and call for the resignations of Chinese Communist Party leaders deemed too repressive. For nearly three weeks, the protesters kept up daily vigils, and marched and chanted. Western reporters captured much of the drama for television and newspaper audiences in the United States and Europe. On June 4, 1989, however, Chinese troops and security police stormed through Tiananmen Square, firing indiscriminately into the crowds of protesters. Turmoil ensued, as tens of thousands of the young students tried to escape the rampaging Chinese forces. Other protesters fought back, stoning the attacking troops and overturning and setting fire to military vehicles. Reporters and Western diplomats on the scene estimated that at least 300, and perhaps thousands, of the protesters had been killed and as many as 10,000 were arrested.
